All organisations, governments included have policies on data preservation. Data is classified and then preserved depending on importance pre -assigned. The data destroyed in five years - relatively short period, must be data of low value. It will be destroyed if nobody has asked for its preservation. If someone asks for it after the standard period, well there's nothing to be done.

Even if data were to be stored electronically, even there one will have to choose as its not possible to scan every paper generated by the govt.

I remember Canada as per their standard practice destroyed data critical for Kanishka bombing probe. Question is, was this data critical to the riots probe? If yes, then how come nobody asked for it in five years?

Judging from the US/Canadian business men who stood in line in Vibrant Gujarat and signed MoU's for investment, I would guess yes.

Question is, was this data critical to the riots probe? If yes, then how come nobody asked for it in five years?

No we would never do that. We were willing to forget the past and forgive the muslims and wanted to live in peace , when the godhra incident happened. Anyways, India in its destiny will remain secular, letting all religions coexist unlike all the other nations in this world. thats why for centuries india has been atracting people until today

Gujarat riots were a major administrative failure, but there is no evidence that Modi was supporting the rioting.

This issue has become a political football, unfortunately. There were Congressmen who burned the people in the train, and there were Congressmen who rioted, but nobody wants to talk about that. Modi is always the favorite whipping boy.

Sanjiv Bhatt is a very shady character and it has been shown that the Tehelka "stings" were also fabricated.

as for godhra -- it was only rumours that led wild hindu herds to attack innocent Muslims. Many people still agree that the train fire was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

modi just fed on emotions and mob mentality.....but it would be fun if he did become PM of hindstan -especially since even top indian generals (serving in occupied Kashmir, or having served during the genocide of Sikhs) have been denied visas time and time again (even the Chinese did it)
