Yesterday Iranian ground forces released footage of "Tiam" a new upgrade on Iranian M-47 tanks.
like the previous upgrade "Sabalan", Tiam is using a 105mm gun which is based on famous British L7, this cannon was even installed on the early models of Abram tanks too. an interesting part of this new and small turret is installing of explosive reactive armor on the top of the turret, which is against the top-attack missiles. this was due to the experiences from Syrian war that most of the Tanks were destroyed by TOW 2B missiles which is a top-attack missile.
Iran is estimated to have 160 M47s bought in 1950.

"Sabalan" was the name of the previous upgrade on Iranian M-47 tanks:

. .
Useless "upgrade".. This tank is done why even bother.. Produce more Zulfiqars instead.
money!
besides, different tanks for different threats.
also if this tank can really withstand a TOW2B missile as the writer suggests, then it's not useless!

Bro if somehow ERA was everything .. There would have been no need to develop armour for new tanks ..

These tin cans are useless.. The best you can do with them is for training crews or for use as mine clearers.

Per army they have nearly 200 of these tanks and it is stupid to get rid of them while they can be upgraded and be used in missions that suits them. This is a normal procedure in all advanced nations. Be it USA or Iran...
Kudos

these are useless against a modern army or even against those daesh cun5s...

200 isn't a big number ... These tanks have served you for like 6+ decades .. It's time to move on.. Apart from the era tiles I don't see any significant upgrade ... Better put mine ploughs on em and use them for de-mining missions... Or at max use them against in COIN operations ..

We are already in process of getting phasing out old tanks.. Apart from extensively up graded T-59IIs to AZ status (Complete upgrade)., the old ones are either being used for de mining purposes .. Or being retired... Some given to paramilitary to be used against taliban ..

AZ (without ERA)---- ERA plates are standard ..

Older Type series with little mods for use against taliban;

It's seem we still haven't learned our lesson!

At the end of the day having so many different types of tanks in combat is a logistical nightmare when it comes to maintenance
and when it comes to your armored division, MAINTENANCE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS IN REAL COMBAT!
Having to transport and secure different parts, ammunition, tool and even different technicians for each tank type is a logistical nightmare!
Also, saving parts off of tanks that have been hit or are decommissioned means absolutely nothing when your operating so many different type of tanks or have so few of a certain tank type!

I really don't know what is wrong with Iranian engineers and why such little research goes in to development of our weapons and why they fail to do a cost benefit analysis of weapons they repeatedly choose to not get rid of!

They are a good tool for training but why spend time and money on putting reactive armor on tanks that in reality are only good for training

Iranian commanders would have to be truly out of their mind if they spread this tank across the country for anything other than training! you either keep them all concentrated in a certain section of the country or u use them for training because they are absolutely useless for anything else

to be honest I am curious if this was worth the investment.
maybe useful to upgrade reserve tanks... but to me it seems like the money could have been put towards more modern armour like the Zulfiqar-3.
or even for the Karrar in the near future.
Iran already had an upgrade in the sabalon also... which really makes me feel it is a waste of funds.

.
I'm no expert but this can be a good tank for crew practice . nothing more .

Karrar and Zolfiqar are the way to go .
Actually I like it more than T-72!
You don't need such an upgrade for crew practice.

our commanders aren't wealthier than those who send these junks to secure their borders:

You both are right to some extent. I don't believe that they should be decommissioned. I think these upgrades are not a waste of time but they are not valuable against a tough classic army

But they will rock in Syria or Iraq against armed insurgency.

For classic armies as desertfighter said, its better to go for Karrar and zoli joon :D

We could easily send the modern tanks to the border but apparently there is no need, i know you are worried for our well being but dont you worry bro. :)

my point was clear, also I know there is no need of anything there:

You are right :)
The other side of the fence = Good ISIS
If they pass over the fence = Bad ISIS
It was a couple years back, it has changed now and Turkey actively targeted isis various times already.
