Multi-role imply suitability for both air-to-air combat missions and air-to-surface strike missions.Both are multi role. Neither is built for air to air combat. Both are built for attack. They have reduced speed and no thrust vectoring and reduced agility.
And only a mentally-challenged individual think that F-35 variants are not potent in air-to-air combat missions. Norway Royal Air Force requested USAF to dispatch a number of F-22A Raptor to stress their F-35 variants in mock fighting situations not long ago, because other aircraft were not up to the task.
