About martial Arts

You hear correctly bro. Being a practitioner myself , I can vouch that Krav Maga is no sport. It emphasizes neutralizing the opponent by targeting his weakest areas and bringing him down in one or two strikes .

Karate or any other "traditional" martial art which i ve also practiced doesnt stand a ghost of a chance against a true - scientific hand to hand combat system .

Eg. Krav Maga -Israeli , Systema -Russian , The U.S hand-to hand or the Indian Bison system .

'Traditional martial arts also a scientific hand to hand combat system. explain how do u differ the traditional form and scientific combat system.

Good point. A lot of these krav maga fan boys wouldn't be able to touch a shaolin monk.

I want to learn 'Krav Maga' but they don't have a single Dojo here in Lahore !

Might have some thing to do with that silly line on your passport, you could always come to NZ to train though.

That's a misconception. Most Chinese martial arts have degenerated into flowery dance movements which really have no value until you have an insane amount of experience in it. Even then, they need to go up against similar martial arts practitioners to stand a chance in actual combat.

You may have to go all the way over to Israel or the US to learn it right. You can even learn it in India ( i think there are a few centers here and there ). Two countries out of the three are not accessible to Pakistani nationals.

my son, a shaolin monk's entire body is a weapon. Starting from an early age, they condition every part of their body.

I did not dispute that. You need to have an insane amount of experience to even be able to stand a chance in actual combat. As of late, Shaolin kung fu practitioners which includes monks focus on putting up a good show in international/national stage shows. This resulted in a new crop of instructors who modified actual combat techniques into flowery dance techniques.

So, since we're discussing martial arts, i'd like to present Kerala's ( Indian state ) own martial arts system, the kalari payattu. It is a 3000-year-old art form which can be traced back to Sage Parasurama- the master of all martial art forms and credited to be the re-claimer of Kerala from the Arabian Sea. Kalaripayattu originated in ancient South India. Kung- fu, popularized by the monks of the Shoaling Temple traces its ancestry to Bodhi Dharma - an Indian Buddhist monk and Kalaripayattu master.

It draws inspiration from the raw power and sinuous strength of the majestic animal forms - Lion, Tiger, Elephant, Wild Boar, Snake, and Crocodile. Kalaripayattu laid down the combat code of the Cholas, the Cheras and the Pandyas. You can learn it in various centres across kerala. Although, like kung fu, this too is slowly reducing itself to flowery dance techniques. However, there are many purists and old families who insist on keeping alive the combat element alive and sharpened.

Following its popularization, several foreign martial arts practitioners have come to Kerala ( India ) to learn its techniques.

How about this?

Varma adi or Marma adi ("hitting vital spots") is a part of the art of healing and harming Varma Kalai (Tamil: வர்மக்கலை, Malayalam: വർമക്കല) Marma Vidhya, It is a component of adi murai "law of hitting" which is a martial art that teaches methods to attack pressure points of the human body. This system of marmam is part of Siddha Vaidhyam, attributed to the Tamil sage Agastya and his disciples.[1]

It is practiced in almost all parts of Tamil Nadu and in the Travancore region of Kerala. It is supposedly derived from traditional Siddha medicine.[2]

The Kerala Kalarippayat Association formed in 1958 started claiming kalaripiyattu was an umbrella term for all Indian martial arts and gave "Adi Murai" and its component Marma adi as well as silambam and other Tamil martial arts the title of "southern style" of Kalarippayattu although its techniques origins and application are recognized as distinct from those of Kalarippayattu. "Adi Murai" emphasise empty hand techniques.[3] Southern kalaripayat is practiced in most cities of Tamil Nadu,[3][4][5] of erstwhile Travancore areas.

[edit] Pressure points

Further information: pressure point

Varma adi recognizes 108 marmas, 12 Padu marmas (death marmas) and 96 Thodu marmas (touch marmas). There are also counter marmas to heal trauma to the marmas.[6]

Pencak Silat

Pencak Silat is a martial arts form popular in Indonesia and is a combination of the two terms that refer to fighting styles in two different locations in Indonesia. The term Pencak is a term utilized in central and eastern Java, while the term Silat is used in Sumatra. Aside from the locations, the word Pencak is something that would refer more on martial arts performance, while silat is more on the art of self defense. By joining these two terms, they have unified the form of martial arts in the entirety of Indonesia in 1948.

The growth of pencak silat is very rich, when it comes to history. Due to the absence of written records, the basis of Pencak silat's history is archaeological artifacts that can be traced several centuries back in the Malay group of islands. It has also been stated that the Srivijaya and Madjapahit warriors have showed their expertise when it comes to this form of martial arts.

The weapons that were used in the Indonesian Pencack Silat are kris or a dagger, kujang or a sunda blade, batang or a regular rod made from bamboo, badik or makasar blade and many more. Aside from this, Pencak Silat has incorporated grappling styles, other Arabian weaponry, and colorful costumes like sarong. This type of martial arts has also been used in order to protect themselves from Dutch invasion. However, due to further invasion, Indonesian settlers were driven off and bringing the Pencak Silat tradition with them to the Malay land.

For novice Pencak Silat players, they would be taught offensive moves using the arms, elbows, fists, and legs. The moves would also include targeting the essential body points through tearing or poking. Just like any other martial arts, its moves are also a combination of upper movement and good footwork in order to be executed properly.

There are several classifications or levels in Pencak Silat. The beginners are in the level of kang, then will gradually level up to mahaguru. During the old times, instructors of this martial arts are very much strict in order to toughen up the students and would use different criteria in choosing their students. They would also take high morals and good character in choosing the students.

There are also some spiritual components when it comes to Pencak Silat. The main reason why spiritual components are being taken part to this martial arts is to promote character development of the practitioner. Pencak Silat comes a very long way. The good thing about this is that this martial arts is being known world wide, as another exciting combat martial arts game, for everyone to enjoy and learn from.

Systema

Systema is a russian martial art in which its training includes hand to hand combat, grappling, knife fighting, and fire arms training as well.Training involves drills and sparring without set kata. It focuses mainly on controlling the six body levers (elbows, neck, knees, waist, ankles, and shoulders) through pressure point application, striking and weapon applications. Systema is often advertised as being a martial art employed by some Russian Spetsnaz units.

The russian System of combat includes a wide varity of subject mattter. A few of them are:

Confinded space defence

Escaping holds

Water fighting

Gun disarming

Firearm tactics

Hand to Hand

Holds

Knife disarming

Knife fighting and throwing

Personal protection (body guard training)

Breathing

Strength and flexability

Strikes

Wrestling (also know as Russian Sambo)

Krav Maga, Systema and the likes are self defense courses not martial arts per se.

Every traditional martial art has "self defence" incorporated in it, but it goes beyond self defence and it encompasses physical conditioning, body-mind coordination, discipline, self confidence and peaceful spiritual thoughts, since, when you master a martial art - be it kung fu , karate or aikido ...- you never feel aggressive , so you do not attract aggressive people to start with.

To answer some childish posts here comparing martial arts in fights, there is no such fantasy, in reality, anyone who fully masters a traditional martial art can defend himself against any other fighting arts.
The flowery dance in kung fu is very deceptive to the untrained eye, it hides some of the deadliest and most effective of "all weather" fighting techniques.
I personally prefer traditional Aikido of master Ushiba, with background in Tae kwon Do, Okinawan or shotokan karate, shoringi kempo or Shaolin kung fu as a plus.
Taijitsu is one of the most efficient Martial arts, but it is still just a small part of a more powerful and specialised martial art called ninjatsu.

There are just too many wonderful styles to chose from.
