The U.K. on Tuesday reviewed its advisory for British travelers to India after a Swiss tourist was allegedly raped by a group of men in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
The travel advisory mentions that more cases of sexual assault against women and girls are being reported in India, noting that there have also been recent sexual attacks against foreign tourists.
It asks women to be “cautious” when travelling in India and suggests women “respect local dress codes and customs and avoid isolated areas, including beaches, when alone at any time of day.”
It also asks them to avoid travelling alone on public transport, or in taxis or auto rickshaws, particularly at night.
The caution is the latest to cast India’s treatment of women in a poor light since the December gangrape in Delhi of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, an incident that attracted attention worldwide.
The advisory adds women should exercise caution even if they are travelling in a group because “women travelers often receive unwanted attention in the form of verbal and physical harassment by individuals or groups of men,” it says.
On Tuesday, a British tourist said she jumped out from the balcony of her hotel room in the northern city of Agra to escape sexual harassment, according to local police.
Sachin Chauhan, the hotel’s manager, has been arrested by police. He has been charged with sexual assault. Mr. Chauhan couldn’t be reached for comment.
The British tourist will be taken to the British embassy in Delhi after she gives her statement in court Wednesday, Pawan Kumar, superintendent of police in Agra, told India Real Time. She doesn’t wish to continue her trip and will return to U.K., he added.
Hotel Agra Mahal, where the incident allegedly took place, had been temporarily shut by the police, Mr. Kumar added.
Other countries also ask female travelers to India not to travel alone.
A U.S. travel advisory says that “eve-teasing,” an Indian term for sexual harassment, can occur anytime anywhere, especially in crowded areas like a market place or in the street. It says that “rape is the fastest growing crime in India,” and foreign women should be vigilant.
It asks women to keep their hotel room number confidential and make sure that room doors have chains, deadlocks, and spy-holes.

NEW DELHI: For three days now, a five-year-old girl from Gurgaon has been suffering the trauma of rape and mutilation at Safdarjung Hospital. The case-similar to the recent gang rapes of minors reported from Gandhi Nagar and Badarpur border in Delhi, and Sikar in Rajasthan-is shocking for the extreme barbarity with which the child was tortured. A doctor, who did not want to be identified, told TOI: "Her abdomen has severe injuries and bite marks. There are deep bite marks on the child's cheeks and her chest, too."
Doctors say the child has undergone multiple reconstructive surgeries to repair her private parts and a surgical procedure to create an artificial opening for passing stool. Dr B D Athani, medical superintendent, however, said the girl is out of danger.
With no support from social workers and the government, the child's poor family is also passing through an ordeal. "No one has been arrested. The state authorities have not even met us once or extended any financial support," said the father, a roadside barber in Sikandarpur, Gurgaon. The 30-year-old said his family has been living on the footpath and in the hospital's corridors. "The guards don't allow us inside the ICU. We get to meet her briefly in the evening." His wife said her two sons, aged three and seven, are too scared now to even step out of the house.
The child was abducted and raped by unidentified men on Saturday. Family sources said she was lured with the promise of a free meal at a langar (community meal) nearby. "We found her lying near Sikandarpur Metro station. There was blood and mud all over her face and body. We rushed her to a Gurgaon hospital and from there she was referred to Safdarjung," said the mother.
Safdarjung Hospital, on average, receives 70-80 cases of poly-trauma caused by rape. "Currently, we admit all rape cases in the gynaecology receiving room first. In most rape cases victims have multiple injuries," a senior doctor said.
Doctors said mutilation and torture are becoming more and more common in city rape cases.

The bodies of the three girls — aged 6, 9 and 11 — were found in the well in Bhandara district in Maharashtra state on Saturday after they had been reported missing two days earlier, said A.R. Tiwari, a local police inspector.
The shocking news comes as India is still reeling from the horrific allegations against five men and a juvenile who are accused of gang raping and murdering a 23-year-old woman in New Delhi in December. The five men are currently on trial.

Preliminary medical reports suggest that the girls died from drowning and had been sexually assaulted, he said.

“Had the police searched for the girls in the neighboring areas, then they would have been found,” she said in the interview, for which her identity was withheld in keeping with Indian law that protects the victims and families in sexual assault cases.
But police denied her allegations.
“We acted promptly,” Tiwari said. “Wireless messages were issued the same day and police teams fanned out to find the girls.”
The mother is nonetheless urging police to catch those responsible quickly.

Funny you should mention Tiananmen square- The square has a glorious history but is only known by the International community for the 1989 incident. Many more people die in India every day for want of the most rudimentary of needs but that is hardly reported like the 1989 incident.
