What does China want?

.
Does not this same argument cover the issue of Arunachal Pradesh, The Senkakus, Taiwan, all of which are outside Chinese administrative control ? I mean in principle it may not, because your side still claims them, despite the fact that other powers maintain administrative control. :)

Completely different from Spanish and British, they gave up their territories willingly, China never did. The dispute is more similar to Japan's claim of Kuril island, even though Russia control it now.

Only in case of Chinese it became historica Chinese land even if Qing Empire lost many territories before China became a republic. :omghaha::omghaha:

Japan too claim Kuril island as their historical land, though it loses control. China went thru a civil war, breakaway territories were re-claimed. They're illegitimate anyway, not recognized by the League of Nations.

Wonder why you have such bad reputation. Just look at your post in this thread; no knowledge of history, concoct lie and distort facts. Thanks for proving me right by showcasing your intellect once again.

The Chinese civil war never really ended. CCP and KMT were fighting for control of Mainland + Taiwan in 1945-1949 (After Japan renounce Claim on Taiwan).

The KMT is still alive today.

The CCP never finished the job because she did not have a navy in 1949. I read that during the battle of Hai Nan, the CCP were using mortars on wooden Junks 18th century style.

Everyone loves a healthy Chinese business, especially US. Nothing can stop a rising China, a powerful China. But a powerful China must be a responsible China, that’s the US mindset right from the beginning. But China acts like everyone must be responsible for its humiliation, first the US, then now both US and Japan. Someone analyzed “Chinese government will never immediately deal with Senkaku. If tomorrow Japan gives China Senkaku, Beijing will start talking about Okinawa. They will say ‘We don’t want Senkaku anymore. We want Ryukys’”. It might be exaggerating, but his next sentence was not wrong “Their (Chinese) political system needs to be hostile towards Japan. It’s the fuel of the system. They cannot survive without being hostile to Japan. You cannot defuse the tension, because China absolutely needs tension”. It’s not a matter of right or wrong, it’s a matter about China cannot monopoly nationalism. No matter how wrong Japan was in World War 2, China keeps provoking Japanese national pride, forces them to the dead end then Japan will react, violently. (That’s for you, @Nihonjin1051).

Very interesting point. Yes, I am in the agreement that the CPC uses political demagoguery and capitalizes on the issues of WWII for maximum benefit, especially to rise the public attention and support. It was not just the CPC, even before China was ruled by the CPC, the Government of Sun Ya Sen used China's utter and absolute defeat to Japan in the 1st Sino Japanese War to proliferate nationalism , and undermine the Qing Dynasty, leading to a national revolution. The Sino-Japanese War will always be an issue, namely, because it was the only time in history that China was not the leading power in East Asia. Furthermore, it was the only time in history that Japan, once considered a peripheral neighbor, was able to modernize and absolutely defeat China war, but also in political strategy -- gaining control of Chosun (Korea), which was historically a tributary state of China's. No, the 1st Sino Japanese War is a reminder that China has lost the title of Leader of Asia. It no longer is the middle kingdom with tributary states, it is just but one power in the world order, in the modern concept of the family of nations.

Sigh...to correct the article will frankly involve a thorough discussion on the entire Chinese culture, starting with language barrier between Chinese and English, because what "勿忘国耻" and "Never forget national humiliation" only superficially resemble each other and have completely (in fact, opposite) undertones.

My best recommendation is spend some time in China, or at least learn Chinese. This way, you are at least not looking things through a thick, tinted glass.

Given the number of years that would take, perhaps you or @Raphael can provide a rebuttal, or at least point us in the direction of resources that would provide a more complete picture (articles, books, etc.) from the Chinese perspective. I understand that Chinese members here vigorously disagree with the article, but I don't understand why. @Chinese-Dragon 's post in this thread about economic dominance followed by military dominance seems to bolster the author's assertions; and the "century of humiliation" is certainly a recurring theme in the China forum. Where do you think the author has gone wrong?

Short of such a discussion, it appears we must resign ourselves to a permanent misunderstanding, and thus, inevitable conflict.

So smaller countries can’t stop thinking about containment policy. Big countries also do the same. India and Japan signed “Declaration of collaboration security” in 2008 when China increased its power. India and US get closer while US still needs Muslim country (Afghanistan?) to fight against Al Qaida. Human rights are the things US always talks about but when in need they ignores those to shake hand with Indonesia (?). Singapore says they are on China side but lends Changi harbor for US fleet. And Japan, even if the civilians protest, Okinawa still welcome US marines stationed there with red carpet and flower (don’t hate me @Nihonjin1051). The more China threatens, the more countries fall into US arms. Asia cheers when Obama changes US strategic attention from Europe to Asia. Then Asia is concerned when US show weak reactions on Syria, Ukraine.

@xesy ,

First and foremost, I am a Japanese Nationalist. Always have and Always will be. I will support all policies that are to herald the best interests for Japan in a holistic concept (meaning, everything concerned; militarily, economically, socially, culturally).

Only the fringe groups in Japan (left wing communist nut jobs, and the ultra right wingers) are antagonistic towards Japan and the United States Mutual Defense Treaty. The overwhelming majority of us support it, knowing that the security agreement(s) with the United States serves both our interests -- Japan and our long friends and partners, the United States of America.

Can Japan survive without the United States military protection? Sure, it can. In fact, the JMSDF's combined fleet -- the Kaijo Jeitai is greater in number than the US 7th Fleet -- this is true. HOWEVER, we do not see this as basis to remove them. IN FACT, it is added security for us, since Japan is not a nuclear armed power, to have the United States based in Okinawa. The United States' forward deployed contingents of the US Pacific Command -- provide a real and potent Nuclear Umbrella on Japan. Thus we were never under duress by the USSR even during the Cold War.

The honest truth is this: It benefits Japan to have the United States based in Okinawa. And I do not think the Japanese Government wish to change the status quo any time soon.

wonder how the great samurai nationalists see this ?

U.S. Navy sailors convicted in Okinawa rape

social engineering?

Rapes happen every day, everywhere. There are rapes committed by Japanese soldiers onto civilians as well. US soldiers rape German civilians in Germany. The point of the matter is, it is impossible to stop instances of rape because there will be individuals in the armed services that have devious personalities , behavioral disorders. The point is this, there is a mechanism to prosecute the individuals concerned and to have justice rendered. Tho we cannot stop individuals who are determined to rape, policies are enacted to reduce the incidence, and if it does happen, to ensure local justice.

a genuine (not fake) japanese would have felt ashamed, angered for this. show me a single foreign soldier who dares commit such crimes on the soil of china. you can't, thats what freedom and sovereignty stand for, i don't know you understand what freedom and sovereignty mean, your dictionary may have different meaning for them, not mine. i won't make it complex by referring to saussurian semiology but i can tell you, those rapes are more than rapes and they have much deeper symbolic meaning which some get and some don't
