Type 054B FFG News & Discussions

It's very strange that this forum gets the news/images faster than other regular media who are supposed to keep a track of these stuff. So, well done everyone sharing the news and images 👍

Please not again "Pakistan will accquire that too" - I know you said it a different way, but that's how some will surely interpret it! - "... and then we need!".

IMO let the ship just pass its trials, let it be introduced in PLAN service with the assets planned for - and I'm pretty sure the Z-20 will be overall much better than the Z-18 for ASW - and then we can look if there is some export!
Isn’t there a requirement for 6 ships in the 6000 ton class? This ship costs approx. $300-400 million and has most of the features the PN probably needs. Considering that a ship this size would probably be the PN’s largest warship, I was asking how it could be best optimized for the AAW role.

It’s true, we will have to see how the ship performs in PLAN service before any informed speculation can be made on its probability of being selected for acquisition. It’s a decision probably a decade away, or more or less, and a lot can happen in that time.

I guess I just got carried away. :-)

I'm curious, why 054B has only 2 CIWS, similar to 055. Won't it be reducing the effectiveness of close range attack protection? Specially when cannon type CIWS can also help to protect the ship from drone attack. And 054B will be positioned to protect more valuable assets in the formation, like 055 and 052D?

What is PLAN thinking about CIWS actually?

probably thinking it will be replaced by laser weapons soon.

Two CIWS is a standard configuration for most destroyers and frigates.

CIWS are defense weapon of last resort. Incoming missiles are to be intercepted first by HQ-16 or its latest variants, chaff decoy and electronic counter measures. CIWS will be used only if the in-coming missiles pass through HQ-16 interception and ECM.

As for small hostile drones, CIWS is adequate for 360 degree coverage. ECM ia also effective against drones.

If they want to equip laser weapon against drones, they can navalise the Silence Hunter laser weapon. Silence Hunter laser is a matured truck based weapon and does not take up much deck space on navy ships and should be effective against aerial drones and sea surface drones.

silent hunter works great against plastic drones. but modern cruise missiles have armor. China will need to develop more powerful laser

China already got the world most powerful laser.
Powerful enough to rip matter from empty space

And that was in 2018 too

Not to be operational until 2023.
Oops! now is 2023.
So maybe gremlins and Murphy and minions bugged up some things so it might be a bit later.

BUT CHINA ALREADY GOT 5.3 PW LASER AS AT 2018

SURPRISING SCIENCE — JANUARY 26, 2018

Scientist announces a laser so powerful it can tear empty space

Shanghai scientist Ruxin Li has already built the world’s most powerful lasers, and he plans a new one that can rip matter from empty space.

It’s not going to be operational until 2023, but scientist Ruxin Li and his team are planning to start building their Station of Extreme Light (SEL) soon. It’ll be capable of generating brief pulses of power at 100 petawatts (PW), or 100 million billion watts, in a room 20 meters underground. Li expects it to be capable of “breaking the vacuum,” which means it will be able to rip electrons, along with positrons, their antimatter cohorts, out of thin air. While atomic energy demonstrates the possibility of converting matter into intense heat and light, no one has yet flipped around Einstein’s E-mc2 equation to convert energy to matter. And that’s just what Li has in mind. “That would be very exciting,” he tells Science. “It would mean you could generate something from nothing.”

Li expects about $100 million in funding from the Chinese government sometime early in 2018, and it would seem likely he’ll get it, having already set a word record for the most powerful laser with the Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility (SULF) that’s already produced 5.3 PW, and is being upgraded to generate 10 PW by the end of the year — that’s more than all of the world’s electrical grids produce, a thousand times over.

OK, surely China can easily make laser much less strong to use to whack drones and missiles and Murican planes out of the sky.

After all, it should be easier to build downwards than to build upwards.

Just 1% of that 100 petawatts power be more than enough .

Or even 0.01% of 100 PW will get 1 billion watt power Chinese military laser.

Or even 0.01 % of 5.3 PW Chinese military laser be very acceptable.

:rofl: :omghaha::rofl:

Perhaps not enuff even to whack Murican carrier and not just the planes on it.

But Enuff to make Muricans shit and pee in their pants when they thought about having to face Chinese lasers when pushing turn to real shoving.

PLA Navy launches next-gen frigate

By Zhao Lei | China Daily | Updated: 2023-09-07 08:49

China's new-generation class of guided missile frigate, the Type 054B, will feature a longer operational range, more functions and stronger combat capability, according to Chinese military observers.

The Type 054B is an upgraded variant of the Type 054A, the most deployed frigate class in the People's Liberation Army Navy. About 30 Type 054As are in service with the Navy.

According to images taken and published online by Chinese weapons enthusiasts, the lead ship in the Type 054B class was recently launched at a China State Shipbuilding Corp shipyard in Shanghai, marking its first public appearance.

The launch is one of the most important stages in a ship's construction because once a ship is launched, it means that its major structures have been readied and the major work of the entire construction project has been completed.

Cao Weidong, a retired senior researcher from the PLA Naval Military Studies Research Institute, said the Type 054B is larger, heavier and more advanced than its predecessor.

"The Type 054A has a full-load displacement of about 4,000 metric tons, while Type 054B will displace about 6,000 tons, which means the new model will be able to sail farther, carry more weapons and munitions, and perform more kinds of tasks," he said.

"Based on public information, the new frigate may be capable of carrying land-attack cruise missiles that will enable it to hit ground targets, a capability that previous Chinese frigates do not have," the researcher said.

He noted that the new ship will also boast better information-processing capacity and stealth design, which will give it better agility and situational awareness as well as higher survivability in combat.

Cao added that these advantages will make Type 054B an attractive, competitive option on the international arms market and will be likely to attract many foreign navies seeking powerful and affordable frigates.

Song Zhongping, a military affairs commentator and retired PLA officer, said after nearly two decades of service for the Type 054A, it is natural for the Navy to acquire and deploy a new type of frigate incorporating the latest technology and tactics.

"The Type 054B will be more suitable for ocean operations, those far from Chinese coasts, and will better fit an escort role in an aircraft carrier battle group. It can hunt hostile submarines on the periphery of the carrier group and can also conduct anti-aircraft and anti-missile operations to assist the air defense network formed by destroyers," he said.

Thanks to its larger aviation area, Song said, the new vessel will be able to carry a Z-20 helicopter to conduct reconnaissance and hunt submarines. By contrast, the Type 054A can only carry a smaller Z-9 helicopter that has shorter airborne time and fewer weapons.

At a news conference in Beijing last week, Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian confirmed the frigate model's construction in the first official statement about the vessel.

Wu described the development of this new ship and other combat vessels by the PLA Navy as a "normal arrangement "based on the country's national security and the overall buildup plan of the Navy, adding that this new hardware will be used to "safeguard China's sovereignty, security and development interests" and to "better protect global and regional peace and stability".

According to analyses from Western weapons observers, the Type 054B will be equipped with a 32-cell vertical launch system capable of firing various types of missiles and rocket-assisted torpedoes, a 100-millimeter-caliber main gun, and a rotating active electronically scanned array radar.
