DRDO conducts maiden trial of Python-5 Air to Air Missile​

Tejas, India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft, added the 5th generation Python-5 Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) in its air-to-air weapons capability on April 27, 2021. Trials were also aimed to validate enhanced capability of already integrated Derby Beyond Visual Range (BVR) AAM on Tejas.

The test firing at Goa completed a series of missile trials to validate its performance under extremely challenging scenarios. Derby missile achieved direct hit on a high-speed maneuvering aerial target and the Python missiles also achieved 100% hits, thereby validating their complete capability. The trials met all their planned objectives.

Prior to these trials, extensive missile carriage flight tests were conducted at Bengaluru to assess integration of the missile with aircraft systems on board the Tejas, like Avionics, Fire-control radar, Missile Weapon Delivery System and the Flight Control System.

At Goa, after successful separation trials, live launch of the missile on a Banshee target was carried out. Python-5 missile live firing was conducted to validate target engagement from all aspects as well as beyond visual ranges. In all the live firings, missile hit the aerial target.

The missiles were fired from Tejas aircraft of Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) flown by Indian Air Force (IAF) Test pilots belonging to National Flight Test Centre (NFTC).

The successful conduct was made possible with years of hard work by the team of scientists, engineers and technicians from ADA and HAL-ARDC along with admirable support from CEMILAC, DG-AQA, IAF PMT, NPO (LCA Navy) and INS HANSA.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has congratulated the teams of DRDO, ADA, Indian Air Force, HAL and all involved in the trial. Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr G Satheesh Reddy appreciated the efforts of scientists, engineers and technicians from various organisations and industry.

PL-10 E IIR HOBS Missile
The latest version of Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder aircraft JF-17C would be equipped with what is seen as the most advanced Short ranged air-to-air missile in the Chinese arsenal, according to reports.

Till now, only the Chinese J-20 ‘Mighty Dragon’ has been carrying this missile.

On April 27 2021, an image surfaced on the internet showing a JF-17 Thunder Block-III prototype (No. 3001) armed with two wingtip-mounted PL-10E short-range AAMs. The image, published by airliners.net, was reportedly taken in March 2021.

The PL-10E is reportedly among the most advanced AAMs in its league and was specifically developed for China’s fifth-generation J-20 fighter jet. The missile is in the same bracket as the AIM-9X Sidewinder and the AIM-132 ASRAAM

It has 90° High-Off Bore Sight (HOBS) capability. When cued with a Helmet Mounted Display and Sight (HMDS) system, it significantly eases the operator’s effort to zero in on an airborne target by allowing him to gain a lock-and-fire the missile without turning the whole airframe towards the target.

The imaging-infrared (IIR) seeker is another major highlight, as it is highly resistant to infrared flares and focuses on aircraft signature precisely according to the developers. This will also be the first missile of such type to be integrated with a Pakistan Air Force platform.

With the PL-10E, the JF-17 Block III will get a tremendous boost in its dogfighting abilities and will have an edge over its rivals — especially the Indian Air Force fighters.

Strikingly, on a day when the JF-17 image surfaced on social media, the Indian Air Force successfully integrated the Python-5 AAM with its homegrown fighter LCA Tejas.

PL-10 has a length of 2.96m, diameter 0.16m, weight 105kg, max range 20km.In 2019 one intruding high altitude reconnaissance balloon was shot down by a PL-10 fired from a J-10C, marking its first kill in real combat. The first foreign customer is believed to be PAF JF-17 Block III and J-10CE.

It features
- An IIR seeker (containing a 128x128 focal plane array)
- A laser proximity fuze and TV
giving the missile a 90° off-boresight angle and a max load of 55g.

PL-10 possesses an excellent IRCCM capability against modern fighter aircraft maneuvering at high-gs.

It also has a "lock-after-launch" capability, which could extend its range to BVR. When coupled with HMDS, the missile allows the pilot to engage a target over his shoulder without maneuvering the aircraft extensively.

Similar to AAM-5 and IRIS-T, the latest design (circa 2013) features 4 enlarged tail stabilizing fins plus 4 narrow stabilizing strips attached to the mid-section of the missile body, which help maintain missile's maneuverability at the terminal stage after the solid motor stops working.

Despite the terrible disaster that has struck Turkey, and Syria recently the Turkish Air Force is pulling out all the stops to still host spotter’s days for exercise Anatolian Eagle. This is, of course, an incredible achievement, for which we enthusiasts can only be incredibly grateful.

The exercise will now take place from May 2-12, instead of June, as first announced. The spotters days are scheduled for 9 and 10 May 2023.

If all those features are true there would be more customers for the JF-17
If it were the only consideration, but just like the Gripen, technical capabilities aren’t the only or sometimes even the primary driver in sales.

thunder needed a better engine(rd93 ma or ws 13) and IRST but apparently were shelves in favour of getting more J10s
In the grand scheme of things I would rather have those J-10s then those two features on all the JF-17s. The J-10s offer things the JF-17s can’t; range and a greater payload, but especially a chance to end the F-16 Saga.

But to balance east and west, and not scare off the Americans; I hope the PAF keeps lobbying hard to get the Ozgur upgrade so it can utilize Turkish missiles; such as the future ramjet powered BVR missile.

The Gripen has been around a decade longer than the JF-17 with an American engine that was sold to US allied states looking to replace their F-5s and similar western bloc aircraft.

A lot more potential customers, and for those looking for the most bang for the bucks, can’t go wrong with the Gripen in the 4th Gen options.

In comparison, how many Chinese partner nations can afford or need a fighter similar to the JF-17. Furthermore, the JF-17 has been offered only with a Russian origin engine up until recently. Many Chinese partner nations are getting by with their older aircraft but if they can spare the money for are willing to upgrade their Air Force, the JF-17 is their best option; especially since the CAATSA sanctions made Russian options less attractive.

Its more than just the balancing.

Not to mention the cadre of pilots built up over decades of operations. Indeed, a lot of sunk costs by the PAF into the F-16, including the relationship between Pakistan and the US.

Most countries outside of the western bloc are still in the Russian defense procurement bloc, or at least were until CAATSA and the Ukraine war; Vietnam, Algeria (which sent back fighters), at times Egypt to some extent which cancelled an order for Russian jets due to CAATSA.

Iraq has been considering the JF-17 recently and not for a lack of funds or options.

The JF-17 in the form of the Block 3 has only now achieved a level of capability which interest many nations; Azerbaijan, Argentina, Iraq, with Nigeria looking to make an order beyond its initial 3 once the Block 3 is available.

A reliable Chinese engine is another thing some countries might be holding out for; a one stop option to prevent a disruption of spares and maintenance in the wake of the Ukraine war.

For many other nations, the prospect of war seemed slim, so in the era of economic troubles many developing nations didn’t want to spend on military modernization, it as the sudden Sudan civil war has shown, these things can flare up out of nowhere and having a small loyal Air Force (even one squadron near the capital could be decisive) can be the difference between air superiority/and order vs. a prolonged civil war. If a jet is seen as being a decisive factor in the outcome of a war it could boost sales as well; as was said to be the case with the increase in Harrier sale to India, after it had only acquired a handful before the Falklands war.

Speaking of conflicts that could flare up; if Britain is seen as a declining military power, and to push back for potentially enhanced British support for Taiwan, China could finance a sale of the JF-17 to Argentina, to increase the pressure on the Brits vis a vi the Falklands.

Politics and economics play more of a role then the technical capabilities of any key in question.

It seems that Pakistan is preparing to offer its new ‘Taimoor’ air-launched cruise missile (ALCM) for export.


According to promotional material reportedly released by Global Industrial and Defence Solutions (GIDS), the sales and marketing arm of Pakistan’s state-owned defence producers, the Taimoor ALCM provides a range of 1,200 km. It has a total mass of less than 1,200 kg.

Pakistan revealed the Taimoor ALCM at the 2022 International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) as both an ALCM and, reportedly, as a next-generation anti-ship cruising missile (ASCM).

Background: GIDS Taimoor ALCM​

With the Taimoor ALCM, GIDS is now marketing two cruise missiles to the world market. The other cruise missile in GIDS’ catalog is the Harbah-NG ASCM. Both are subsonic cruising missile designs.

The Harbah-NG is deployable from surface warships and land-based vehicles. It would not be surprising if the Taimoor and Harbah-NG are closely related, especially in terms of their critical inputs, like propulsion, guidance systems and, potentially, terminal-stage seekers.

According to GIDS, the Harbah-NG leverages on a Digital Scene-Mapping Area Correlator (DSMAC) system alongside a terminal-stage seeker. The terminal-stage seeker can be an imaging infrared (IIR) or an active-radar homing (ARH) system.

The Taimoor could be using the same DSMAC and IIR combination.

Weighing up to 1,200 kg, the Taimoor is comparable in size to the MBDA SCALP and KEPD-350. By capping the range at 290 km, Pakistan is staying under the limits of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR)…

Can’t Export a Missile Without a Platform​

There is no actual rule stating that a cruise missile without a platform cannot be sold, but there is no doubt that having one available is critical for commercial success.

With a launch platform at hand, Pakistan can showcase the Taimoor’s performance and demonstrate that the missile’s been tested and matured in real-world environments.

However, there are few platforms on the market where Pakistan can realistically offer the Taimoor to as a stand-alone product. For example, current-generation American-built fighters are a non-starter. It is also unlikely that countries using modern European fighters would be the Taimoor’s target market…

Taimoor Adds to the JF-17 Package​

Both Pakistan and China have steadily been working to add contemporary subsystems and munitions to the JF-17. Interestingly, even the launch variant – i.e., Block-I – provided the PAF with a stand-off weapon (SOW) capability via the C-802A ASCM.

The Block-II built on this with the integration of precision-guided bombs (PGB), notably the Range Extension Kit (REK) and Indigenous REK for MK-8X-series bombs.

But when the Block-I entered service, it did not carry the cutting-edge technologies found on Western jets at the time. Thus, potential buyers would readily see what they were not getting with the JF-17 when they pressed it against the F-16, Gripen, Rafale, Typhoon, and others.

However, the story of the JF-17 Block-III is clearly different.
With the emphasis on adding an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, helmet-mounted display and sight (HMD/S) system, and electronic countermeasures (ECM) suite, Pakistan is closing feature gaps.

Granted, when compared against the likes of the F-16, Rafale, Typhoon, or even Gripen E/F, the JF-17 will not be seen as the more sophisticated platform. However, from a capability standpoint, the Block-III could offer the air warfare technologies many price-conscious countries would want.

  • HAVA-SOJ (EW a/c)
  • MEHPOD (EW pod for F16s, JF-17s etc.)
  • KORAL land based EW
  • Stealthy Kizilelma and ANKA-3 (Turbofan powered and AI controlled combat UAVs for low-cost low-risk A2A, A2G, EW, DEAD, SEAD etc. ops). 20m$ Kizilelma is being geared to wrestle down 200m$ Rafale
  • GOKHAN (ramjet based BVR missiles)
  • HISAR & SIPER AD (short, medium and long and range AD missiles)
