Saudi warship hit by a Houthi missile off the coast of Yemen

simple question. Why boast about Your (Armed forces) if they cannot protect their own country?
Why would a fly by be boasting? Its "Your taxdollars at work": we like our governments to show what our money pays for.

Trump wanted extra military gear paraded for the inauguration. Military declined.

JEDDAH: A Saudi warship targeted last month by a Houthi suicide attack returned to base Sunday after completing its mission.

The “Al-Madinah” warship of the Royal Saudi Navy was hit by a terrorist attack off the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, killing two crew members.

It returned early Sunday to the King Faisal Naval Base in Jeddah, after completing its duties according to the scheduled timeframe, without any delay as a result of the attack by the Iran-backed insurgents.

A number of senior officers received the warship at the naval base.

They included Gen. Abdul Rahman bin Saleh Al-Banyan, chief of staff of the Saudi armed forces; Vice Admiral Abdullah bin Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Sultan, commander of the Royal Saudi Navy; and Western Fleet Commander Saeed bin Mohammed Al-Zahrani.

The chief of staff met with the ship’s crew and officers and conveyed to them the greetings of Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, second premier and minister of defense, who praised the crew’s courage in dealing with the attack.

Al-Banyan listened to a briefing by the captain of the warship regarding the terrorist attack, how it was countered, and how a resulting fire was tackled in a short time.

He expressed pride in the members of the Royal Saudi Navy for participating in military operations carried out by the alliance to support legitimacy in Yemen.

Two Saudi crew members were killed and three others injured in the suicide attack on the Saudi patrol frigate, the Arab coalition headquarters said last week.

The Saudi navy warship reacted to the attack as required, but one of the Houthi boats rear-ended the vessel, resulting in an explosion and fire at the rear of the Saudi ship, which was extinguished by the crew.

The frigate was patrolling the coast of Yemen when the attack by three suicide boats took pace, the coalition in support of the legitimate Yemeni government said.

Its mission involved protecting the territorial waters of the Kingdom and Yemen, in addition to ensuring the safety of international navigation lines in the strategic Bab Al-Mandab Strait.

Al-Banyan stressed that the damage to the warship was limited to a small area at the back of the vessel, due to the collision with the terrorist boat.

He added that the incident will not prevent the coalition forces from continuing their military operations, until they achieve their key target of helping the Yemeni people and the legitimate government in restoring the state and protecting it from Houthi militias.

Where's the so-called suicide boat that the Saudis claim was used to target the ship?

It looks more like a torpedo.

The Saudi media took down the video lol:

This was not suicide boat for sure.

This was not suicide boat for sure.
I know.

But it just goes to show how unreliable the Saudis are. They lack all sorts of credibility.

In June 2015, they denied that a Yemeni missile struck a base in southwest Saudi Arabia. But a week later, they quietly announced that the Saudi air force commander died due to "natural causes".

Last week, they claimed their ship was struck by 3 suicide boats. Their own video footage contradicts everything they officially stated ROFL.

What a joke.

This proves that you shouldn't believe anything the Saudis say. The Yemenis/Houthis are a lot more credible/reliable.

Saudi Arabia thinks it can win the Yemen war by spreading fake news or by denying its military failures/losses/embarrassments.

It was not gunship helo on this ship. It was basic Chinese S&R helo.
Yeah, i know , was speaking about the Gun turret On the ship...
THe Q was why they didn't fired at the boat... now we know why...

Well, if you look at video , a trained crew still have time to neutralize the incoming. But, we don't know Saudi boat weapon configuration.

They had that onboard... Don't know if that will be of any use against that...

The Al Madina class uses OTOBreda 40mm Compact with twin 40 mm/L70 guns

The Twin 40L70 Compact provides effectiveness and reliability especially under the most challenging operations, such as:
- anti-missile defence (subsonic sea-skimmers);
- anti-aircraft defence;
- ship-to-ship engagements.
The Twin 40L70 Compact is in service with more than 20 Navies

Breda 40 mm Compact
This weapon uses two OTOBreda 40 mm/L70 guns and is used on many types of warship from fast patrol boats to frigates. In service in Italian, Argentine, South Korean and other navies. Tests conducted by the Italian Navy in 1976 indicated this weapon had 30% chance of destroying an incoming sub-sonic missile outside of 900 meters (1,000 yards).

Breda Twin Fast Forty
The "Compact" twin mount has been superseded by the newer "Fast Forty" which is available in both single and twin mountings. Breda claims that a twin Fast Forty, firing 900 rounds per minute, can kill an incoming supersonic missile flying in a straight line at ranges as great as 3,280 yards (3,000 m). The mount automatically switches from the lighter
PFHE round to the heavier APFSDS when the missile reaches a range of 1,100 yards (1,000 m).

ALCON,

IMHO,

1) 100% not an AshM attack as was initially talked about, the incoming "bogey" is moving much too slow for that.
2) Likewise, I think any talk of this being a torpedo is equally incorrect. While the speed is about right, a standard torpedoes do NOT create that much surface disturbance (if any at all).
3) Perhaps a VA-111/Hoot? The surface disturbance is more fitting but the speed is all wrong. While there is only video available of this weapon in use, it's good enough to show us the incredible speed the VA-111/Hoot has, and that the "bogey" that hit the Saudi vessel is going far too slow for that.

So where does that leave us? As much as I hate to say this, the Saudi's original story of a "suicide boat" shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

The wake being given off by the "bogey" is far too large for anything EXCEPT an object moving across the surface of the water or partially beneath it (aka look at the wakes surfaced submarines make). The focal point of this wake is definitely small and fairly narrow. The wakes are very reminiscent of the kind you see produced by a speed boat.

So why can't we clearly see a boat? Depending on its size/color, the low-quality of the video could make it difficult to make out.

Either way, whatever hit them, it wasn't an AshM or a torpedo (VA-111 or a more standard design). That doesn't leave a lot of possibilities.

On an unrelated note, the helicopter on the Saudi frigate is not Chinese, but a French-built Dauphin, for which the Chinese Z-9 is a derivative of.

Alarabiya released a new video from the warship clearly shows that attack was conducted by a speedy suicide boat cruising over the horizon right into the rear of the warship.

Here's how a torpedo explosion looks like
