Saudi warship hit by a Houthi missile off the coast of Yemen

JEDDAH: A Saudi patrol frigate was attacked by three Houthi suicide boats off the shore of the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, killing two, the Arab coalition headquarters said Monday.

A Saudi patrol frigate was patrolling the coast of Yemen when the attack took pace, the coalition in support of the legitimate Yemeni government said.

The statement added that the Saudi navy ship dealt with the attacking boats as per the rules of engagement.

One of the boats collided with the rear of the vessel, resulting in an explosion and fire at the rear of the ship, which was brought under control. As a result, two Saudi crew members were killed and three others injured, who are now in a stable condition.

The coalition added that the Saudi ship continued patrolling the area, while coalition air and navy forces chased the other two boats.

The coalition asserts that the continuation of the Houthi militias in the use of the port of Hodeidah as a launching point for terrorist operations is a serious development. It would impact on the international maritime movement and undermine the flow of humanitarian and medical assistance arriving at the port to aid the Yemeni citizens, it added.

In many cases, societies do things in order to show they can. It wouldn't look good for a country who claims to be a superpower not to have any means of long distance projection of power but it doesn't have any significant place in their defense strategy.

Look at position of first flame , its right on rare end deck of ship not on the lower base or portsides . So, it is missile . Hull is saved but weather deck took the hit. Its waterline and keel is fine.

Also, there is a helicopter on the flight deck: if that exploded (for whatever reason) you would also have a flame on the rear end of the flight deck and it wouldn't be a missile. Remember that the video also shows that heli marked in a red circle. Further, if I speed into a motionless solid target, I might wel cause my boat to go tail up at the moment of explosion. Initial reports claimed the damage was inflicted by an anti-ship missile fired from land, similarly to what happened in October last year when UAE Navy vessel HSV Swift was hit by a modified C802 cruise missile in the Bab al-Mandab strait off Yemen’s coast.

The attacked vessel is one of the four Al Madinah-class frigates built for the Saudi Navy in the 80’s.

Saudi officials later confirmed the attack adding that Houthi fighters carried out the attack using “suicide boats”, English language news site Al Arabiya reported.

Officials said that one of the boats struck into the rear of the ship causing an explosion that killed two and injured three other sailors. The other suicide boats were neutralized.

I think heli was armed and explode due to any projectile impact. But, ship seems floating fine.
