Russia backs India''s stand, asks Pak to stop infiltration
Mon, Nov 29 09:54 PM

New Delhi, Nov 29 (PTI) In a clear support to India''s position on Pakistan, Russia today said any compromise on terrorism while normalizing bilateral ties would be "inadmissible" and asked Islamabad to stop infiltration to neighbouring countries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who held talks with External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on a range of issues including the regional situation, said his country appreciated efforts being made by India and Pakistan to normalize bilateral ties.

"We welcome the position of the two countries to build up ties and solve some problems together. But we think that anything that involves compromise when it comes to terrorism is inadmissible and this is our final position," Lavrov said at a joint press conference with Krishna.

Lavrov, while responding to a question, said Russia favoured gradual settlement of issues between India and Pakistan and the presence of both the countries as observers in multi-lateral bodies like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) would help in this direction. "Our position is that relations between Delhi and Islamabad should be settled gradually and this also will settle one day.

I am glad Delhi and Islamabad both are observers (in SCO) and this will be conducive to settlement," he said, speaking through an interpreter. Lavrov said Russia, along with the international community, would back Pakistan in its efforts to eradicate hotbeds of terrorism on its soil, to eradicate terrorism in the neighbouring countries and to stop infiltration of terrorism from Pakistan to neighbouring countries.

"We are absolutely supportive of this," he said. On Russia''s relations with Pakistan, Lavrov said it was their endeavour to involve its neighbours in collective work and ensure that they do not end up in isolation.

"We believe our contacts with the Pakistani leadership are normal because any normal countru will try to deal with everyone surrounding them and involve them in collective work, he said. "The alternative to collective work is isolation and when isolation comes, you see a deadlock like in Iraq and the Middle East and we do not want that to happen," Lavrov said.

Earlier, Krishna and Lavrov discussed issues related to the upcoming visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to India from December 21-22 for the annual summit. (more) PTI SKU AKK

We have been urging Pakistan to check infiltration of terrorists to its neighbours: Sergei Lavrov

Russia on Monday said it had been consistently urging Pakistan to check infiltration of terrorists to its neighbours, Afghanistan and India. Asked, after a meeting with Minister of External Affairs S.M. Krishna, as to why Russia appeared to be getting closer to Pakistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, “I sincerely hope that you are not asking this question of the belief that India and Pakistan will be foes forever.”

Facilitating ties
“As for our position regarding the situation between New Delhi and Islamabad, it is in our interest that relations improve one day, and we are trying to facilitate that using different discussion forums, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), where both India and Pakistan are observers.

“We are welcoming the positions of leaders of India and Pakistan to build up ties and solve problems. Having said that, it important to acknowledge that no compromise is possible with regard to terrorism. This is our position.

“We always urge Pakistani leadership to continue it's efforts for eradication of terrorist hotbeds and to sop the infiltration to the neighbouring countries and this position is stable,” he added.

“Against isolation”
On Russia's contacts with Pakistan, Mr. Lavrov said, “We find it necessary to talk and to cooperate with all countries. It is absolutely important to do it, otherwise it would lead to isolation, and isolation leads to a dead end. We saw an example of Iraq and other places. We are for engagement of all, on which depends the solution of international problems.”

Mr. Lavrov also expressed support for India becoming a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council: “We think that the Security Council would only benefit if India would be its permanent member, and this we take into consideration while discussing reform of the U.N.”

Commenting on revelation by WikiLeaks, he called it an “entertaining read,” but said “on practical policy making we will take into consideration the deeds of our partners.”

SERGEI LAVROV, RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER in India: "Together with all the international communities will back up Pakistan to deal with eradication of the hotbeds of militancy in their country [/B. We are absolutely supportive of this and to stop infiltration of militancy from Pakistan to neighboring countries."

Instead of bickering at each other, it's better to discuss the newspiece in hand. There's two main inference from it IMHO:

1. Russia along with International community will back up Pakistan to deal with eradication of the hotbed of terrorism in there country and the neighboring countries.

2. Russia acknowledges in front of world media Pakistan's role (whether state sponsored or not) in infiltration of terrorism from Pakistan to neighboring countries, mainly India and Afghanistan.

This remarks by the Russian FM is not to be taken lightly as this visit is mainly focused on the preparation of President Medvedev's forthcoming visit to India.

The important point here is Russia's emphasis on gradual improvement of bilateral relation leading to solving of the long standing issues. The following quote also caught my eyes:

We are absolutely supportive of this," he said. On Russia''s relations with Pakistan, Lavrov said it was their endeavour to involve its neighbours in collective work and ensure that they do not end up in isolation.

Russia should be ashamed for being the first to formulate guerrilla terror as means of political goals and spread of communism across central Asia. As well training and exporting the ideology to India which was then successfully used in east Pakistan with extensive soviet help. The damage they have done has far reaching implications still being felt now with several generations ruined.

Or you can once in a while be a man and accept that your country too has created Afghanistan into a battle zone with the help of the U.S.

well they have to sign the 30 billion dollar deal,so some mud throwing on pak to make their deal signed is not bad for them.

Question arises do we really need Russian backing specially when the so called International community mainly comprising of the US and NATO are looking for an exist strategy.

Very typical.India well fine but Whats really funny is when people talk about infiltration from Pakistan into Afghanistan.:disagree:
