ISLAMABAD, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Commentator Farhan Bokhari says that Pakistan later this year will buy six Yuan-class submarines from China.

Bokhari is a Pakistani political commentator based in the capital Islamabad.

The Yuan-class boats are diesel-electric submarines, and the export version is known as the S20, the China Times News Group reported on Thursday.

The China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Corp. (CSOC) builds the S20. CSOC exhibited the S20 at the
Abu Dhabi NAVDEX 2013 international naval equipment exhibition in February 2013 and again a month later at the March 2013 Malaysia LIMA-2013 international aviation and naval equipment exhibition.

Chinese officials said the S-20 was not developed in order to meet domestic needs, but specifically for the international export market. Analysts believed that China's highlighting its Yuan-class S-20s is likely driven by heightened competition from Russian and European diesel-electric submarine builders given potential sales to Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The Yuan emerged in 2004 and since then about seven or eight have been launched for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). In 2010 the U.S. Department of Defense estimated that up to 15 would be built.

.
so we are getting yuan or s-20?

Yuan is almost twice the displacement of s-20.

Yuan with 3600tons displacement will surely carry more weapons

.
I was seriously hoping for the Qing
Anyways will they have AIP and SLCM capabilities?

But isn't this article says that Yuan's export version is S-20? May be bigger S-20 but personally I will say that smaller SSKs with AIP is better than bigger ones. So better if Pakistan goes with smaller S-20s but with AIP added.

Ill take these non-official statements and commentators with a pinch of salt... why? Im among them. There are a lot of what-if and if-ifs in the Pakistani military procurement process. Funny thing is, the smaller and much more interesting things get ignored by all these commentators and perhaps for good reason.

Right now the economy needs to get back on track and for now it seems to have stabilized if not improved. The current government is a tad bit better at it compared to the last government.

You are right about Yuan's export version being the S-20, it is fitted with AIP as PN asked for it.

In terms of size, both Yuan and PN specific S-20 may share the same dimensions but S-20 may house various missiles of chinese/ western and indigenous origins.

S-20 = Yuan export model

.
S-20 is based on the Yuan, but intended for Export. May have more or less technologies than the standard Yuan.

Just like JF-17 Thunder is FC-1 in China and JF-17 in Pakistan.

.
First it was Qing , then S20 and finally now Yuan subs .... :cheesy:

S-20 is the export version of Yuan. If Pakistan goes for submarines from China, it is understood it would be based on new technology.
