What's new

IHS Janes | China, Pakistan set for submarine deal by end of year.

It is a single for a 3.5th generation SSN i guess.

That's expensive for a nation like Pakistan maybe we should go back to france get another deal of larger displacement subs in form of A-90[C] and get tech from scorpion class or something newer. Meanwhile invest with China into something that should be as capable as A-90B atleast with room for advancement/improvement...to be fair this is realistic.

Maybe China could offer the nuclear reactor and the pump-jet technology of the Type 093G when Pakistan is needed to build its nuclear sub.

Maybe its hull design could also help.

the china Ex-Im bank will provide loans just like the USD6.5B for the 2 nuke power plants.

@Aeronaut what is pumpjet ?

Pump jet is a propulsion system uses the same principle of nozzle in aircrafts aginst a conventional propeller (which uses the principle of screws)..
Many submarines now uses pump jet prop.. Verginia class(USA),Ohio class (USA-refitted with), Le-Triomphant class(France),Vanguard class(Royal navy), Borei class(Russia- under development)..
Note that these are all NUCLEAR SUBS.. Usage of pump jets in diesel subs are Impractical because of following reasons,
1. It is bulky and heavy not suitable for diesel subs..
2. It's advantage is they are so much quiteness.. So higher tactical silent speed.. But that is never achievable with present day batteries..
3. It's very expensive to use in diesel subs..

China making pump jet not means that is for yuvan class.. But pump jet prop testing are usually done in diesel subs..
No countries developed a pump jet prop for diesel subs till date and as S20 is a scaled down version of Yuvan class, the pump jet prop is almost impossible..

Yes it is but S20 is Same in length as Yuan but has no AIP if Customer wants AIP and sensor systems from Yuan they can be installed easily said by Chinese person in IDEX 2013
S20 is 10m shorter than Type 039B(67m vs 77m, 2000 ton vs 2600 ton)

A senior Pakistani official recently told the UK's Jane's Defence Weekly that the country is likely to purchase six submarines from China.
The official said the deal will be completed soon and an agreement is expected to be signed by both parties by the end of the year.
The Sina news web portal also cited a Pakistani official who said Islamabad and Beijing had settled the details for the arms sales and only the payment issue needed to be finalized.
The Pakistani source revealed that the S20 diesel-electric submarines, an improved model of the People's Liberation Army's Yuan-class submarines, may be the model that Pakistan will buy because China has actively promoted the model in the global market.
The S20 was developed based on the Type 039 submarine, which is referred to as Yuan class by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and which measures 66 meters in length, 8m in beam and 8.2m in draft.
The surface displacement of the submarine is 1,850 tonnes and its submerged displacement is 2,300 tonnes, with a maximum speed of 18 knots. It can reach 8,000 nautical miles at 16 knots and it can carry 38 crew members in total for 60 days.
It uses a double hulled structure and its maximum dive depth is 300m.
Selling diesel-electric submarines to Pakistan will further consolidate China's role as a supplier for the country’s weapons and military equipment and enhance the Pakistan Navy's combat capability.
At present, the Pakistan Navy has five aging submarines bought from France — three Agosta 90B-class submarines purchased in the 1990s and two Agosta 70-class submarines, bought in the late 1970s.

I think the data you cited is for S20. My data for type 039B is from Chinese source, not any guess from "foreign expert"

What's the cost? Though China does give Pakistan equipment at discounted rates, these six subs could cost quite a packet.

Is it the same submarine which BD is buying, if yes, then BDs should take TOT on it and build 1 in China and 2 in BD. Or other chance is that buy 3 Agosta-90Bs from PN which might going to replace it with 8-10 of these submarines.

6 AIP Yuan Type 41 submarine
3 AIP Agosta 90B submarine
2 Agosta 70 submarine
1 Future Nuclear submarine

Better to replace all of the old submarines with 10-12 of Yuan Type 41 submarine which might be 3000+ Tons submerged....

BDs will surely buy the 3 Agosta-90Bs by 2018... PN need to bring it in quickly...

Good news !!

But why dont PN goes for scorpene or U214 as you need quality subs in your fleet?
