US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said we would not allow Saudi Arabia to become a nuclear power.

Pompeo held an interview with CBS television on Friday evening, saying that the US administration would not allow Saudi Arabia to become a nuclear power and threaten Israel.

Pompeo added:

We will not write a $ 150 billion check to Saudi Arabia and give them the ability to threaten the United States and Israel.

First they will give atomic tech to Saudia, than they will bomb Saudia for that.

That's not what Pompeo said. He said he wouldn't let KSA develop the capacity to threaten Israel and the U.S. with nukes while the U.S. is paying for it - a MUCH more limited statement.

It is the same statement in the article! But the fact is this talk is displaced, since KSA is working on a civilian nuclear program for electricity generation and water desalination.. it consumes too much Oil for that now, so it is also an economic decision..What to understand from these statements is that the US will not allow KSA to make nuclear weapons.. but it is keen to help with nuclear technology.. giving assurances to Usrael..
But what means "while the U.S. is paying for it"? That is a stupid statement!

Easy said than done!

Its a wakeup call for KsA. Time to invest in joint defence projects woth Turkey and Pakistan. These two countries will provide more return on kingdoms investment and security of their investment. With us they dont need to he afraid of loosing their money just like libya did. kSA have billions of dollars stashed in Western banks, it can go puff in a night if west decide now. Why King act so naive ? I agree he can not withdraw all the cash at once but he can still invest 5-6 billion each year in Pakistan Turkey Malaysia etc. That way , if someday Uncle America did try to take all that money, KSA will still have a backup.
Saudi money in the West are mostly investments.. not cash in the banks, the closest to cash are state bonds.. no less! You can't freeze your own projects to punish someone, can you?..

Anti Saudi sentiment is very high in the west. Only a matter of time before there F15s end up like the shahs F14s. A regional bloc GCC + Turkey + Pakistan for defense industrial development with China and Russia as outside consultants would be a big step to strategic independence.

The Associated Press could not immediately reach spokespeople at the Energy Ministry or KACST for comment.

Kelley said it's been surprising to him "how non-transparent" the kingdom has been in the process of building the reactor and "how they seem very cavalier about modifying their arrangements with the IAEA."

Kelley was referring to agreements the kingdom has signed. The kingdom agreed to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty three decades ago. In 2005, it signed an agreement with the IAEA known as the "small quantities protocol" that allows countries with negligible nuclear programs to be exempt from regular inspections or nuclear monitoring.

However, once nuclear fuel is brought into the country to operate this small reactor, inspections by the IAEA would be required, Kelley said.

"It's simply that they're crossing a threshold in terms of their requirements," Kelley said, explaining the significance of the construction of the reactor, which is much smaller than the ones the kingdom has said it wants to build for energy purposes.

The type of reactor being built now, according to the satellite images Kelley identified, is used by technicians for learning and training purposes.

"The reactor is at the bottom of an open tank filled with water 10 metres high. It's very, very small," Kelley said, adding that the core of the reactor is about the size of a gallon-sized paint can.

He said the Saudi reactor is being built by the Argentinian government-owned company INVAP. Before Argentina brings nuclear fuel to Saudi Arabia for the reactor, the IAEA agreement in place that exempts Saudi Arabia from inspections would need to be rescinded, Kelley said.

"I think it's a 100 per cent certainty that Argentina is not going to supply uranium fuel to a country that doesn't have a safeguards agreement in force," he added.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration last week said it approved seven applications for U.S. companies to sell nuclear power technology and assistance to Saudi Arabia. Republican and Democratic lawmakers, however, have expressed concerns that Saudi Arabia could develop nuclear weapons if the U.S. technology is transferred without proper safeguards.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has also not ruled out developing a nuclear weapon. He told CBS last year, "Saudi Arabia does not want to acquire any nuclear bomb, but without a doubt if Iran developed a nuclear bomb, we will follow suit as soon as possible."

It is a research reactor made 100% by Saudi Arabia, with some tech transfer from Argentina..So what 's the fuss about!?

Saudi Arabia should continue good Relationship with U.S.A. This is reality that U.S.A don't want any new state to posses nuclear weapon . This statement will not effect U.S.A ,Saudi relationship. Thanks to western countries, Saudi Arabia has become 4th best Air power in the world. They modernized their weapon system with teeth , one can't deny Saudi Arabia is strongest military. Russia and China has no contribution for Saudi Arabia military, but Nato countries Does.

Yes, i thought it would be a good article to contribute to the thread.
All is good.. the only dumb thing in the article is bringing in MBS's statement and putting it out of context, while it is very clear and well defined: "Saudi Arabia does not want to acquire any nuclear bomb, but without a doubt if Iran developed a nuclear bomb, we will follow suit as soon as possible." And not only in this article.. in almost every article concerning KSA and its civilian nuclear program they bring in MBS statement..eventhough knowing before hand that the program is civilian and will be subjected to the IAEA inspections..

Bit they can stop the cash outflows to KSA, freeze bank accounts.. no ? Projects still active but you get nothing..

Saudis are much smarter than that.. they already have mechanisms to extract their money if they chose to.. remember JUSTA?

Oh.. you are the smart guy who understands the enemy better than the king of Saudi Arabia.. this shows your deep hatred and jealousy .these negative emotions will end up hanging you to sickness and most likely to worst, just like Saddam:lol:.. So better refrain from talking about things you have no clue about..

First they will give atomic tech to Saudia, than they will bomb Saudia for that.
Then it will be too late to bomb.. and, do you know what means bombing Saudi Arabia?
I don't know but I smell trolling..
