PIA to do big upgrades, will have 50 new planes by 2023

A UK friend sent me this news item from the Sun about the hilarious state of PIA. Don't know if I should laugh or cry. I am sure Noor Khan must be turning in his grave at the condition that his beloved PIA is currently in. Do we really expect it to get better without an overhaul of the management & the staff? This is unlikely to happen unless PIA is completely in the private hands.

A FLIGHT from Manchester was delayed by more than seven hours after a passenger opened the plane emergency exit - after thinking it was the 'toilet door'.

Passengers on the flight were then forced to leave the plane after the emergency chute was automatically deployed.

The female passenger was travelling from Manchester Airport to Islamabad with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) when the incident occurred, according to the Express Tribune.

The woman was boarding flight PK702 when she opened door L5, the door at the back of the plane on the left hand side, after thinking it was the door to the toilet.

Passengers were then removed from the flight, with it unclear how the woman was able to open it without the cabin crew stopping her.

The departure time was pushed back from 9:20pm on the Friday to 5am on the Saturday morning, landing at 4pm the following day - seven hours later than scheduled.

When the flight did take off, 37 passengers had to be removed from the flight due to the emergency chute no longer on the aircraft, making it a legal requirement in case of an emergency evacuation.

One passenger, who offered to leave the flight after the incident, complained about the problems that followed.

A Twitter user wrote: "@Official_PIA pathetic service from PIA. I am one of the 38 passengers who voluntarily off loaded from PK702 so it can fly to Islamabad only on the condition that all 38 of us will get our luggage.

"First you did not give it to us in Manchester [and said] that it's going to take time, so don't worry it will be taken to Pakistan on your next flight.

"Then when we reached here today we were told half of our luggage is still at Manchester airport. We have suffered a lot."

During Benazir's 2nd term in office, once I had to pull a few strings to get a business class seat from London to Islamabad. After boarding, I found that Busines Class was deliberately kept half empty so that families of the PIA staff ( normally entitled to free economy seat) could be upgraded to business class seats after the plane took off. As if it was not enough, despite being full fare-paying passenger, I was asked to change seats because staff family members wanted to sit together.

I have since switched to Emirates Airlines. Sorry to say that I am not hopeful. It would simply mean the induction of more staff and more free travel for the staff and even bigger loss. You would need another Noor Khan as the Head of PIA to make it a first-rate airline. That does not require additional planes, simply honest hard working management, first-rate maintenance and only the minimum number of staff.

My nan uses PIA for Lahore to Toronto every 6 months and says that PIA cabin crew is amazing on that route. She says any OAP is asked to come sit in business class before take off. she said shes been offered business class seat everytime business class seats wernt bought by customers.

........and how quickly airlines are dumping them before half their life span, like the a340-500/600's. they should have listened to boeing and should have waited 10 years to introduce it. the current engines put it a generation behind the current trent 1000/XWB,GenX enignes. hence the push for a neo version from emirates. even they have
seen its demise and will flog them one by one, once they hit 15 years of age.
one of the reason emirates is loosing a ton of money is because of the A380. Airlines that ordered them are now scratching their heads how to get rid of the dead horse.
BA and Qantas dont know what to do with their A380 except sending them to the middle east every day so they can refuel for cheap.

and from a passenger point of view yeah A-380 is great and got alot of space, especially in buisness class, fast class and upper deck area, enough space to put a shower room and a open bar etc but its takes 3 x longer deboard and board the plane. lugage wait is so much longer then other aircrafts.

Aviation industry is finally realising the bigger isnt better, in todays market its all about smaller eco friendly planes with more and more flights to destinantions rather then 1 flight everyday in an A380

I can only go by my personal experience. Can't say about anyone else. Suggest you travel by PIA and then by Emirates or Singapore Airlines. You will know what I am talking about.

For the record, PIA is one of the worst international airlines in the world.

Admittedly, all such rankings are highly subjective. Nevertheless, this what many people think of the PIA.

A380 has 2 big issues, the size of the wings and the 4 engines...
Had they opted for foldable wingtips or edges thus making it acceptable for any gud international airport out there then the possible routes would have increased.
Secondly 4 engines make it guzzle more fuel which is ok if u r flying packed but that itself is not possible everytime u fly. So the only way out was again either redesign the wings for 2 engines with a possible 3rd below at tail.. This was suggested by qatar airline and a few others but the order by emirates and the threat of loosing out to the stretched version of 747 killed that chance

good package deals from China, there is so much corruption in spare parts when it comes to Boeing and Airbus

emirates is an ariline with a hub and spoke model which would require it to have large aircraft. oil prices would affect its losses.
BA was actually looking to buy some more a380's. qantas didnt full-fill total desire amount, malaysian airlines are suggesting to fill seat and are using some of them for the upcoming hajj flights, they tried to sell 2 of them before. newer airliners like the 777x and the a350 make the a380 dead whale. the ecomonics are too high which was why emirates pushed for a neo version which never happened .

qatar wants to get rid of them completely and air france and lufthansa want to cut their fleets.

could be a good option for hajj charters
