True, blacks often use the word to address non-blacks too,
I let this boy in my class copy my work, and after he's done, he goes "thanks my n-word", and it was so awkward, so I just sat there.....
Then after I shifted to a private school, there was not even a single whisper if the word.

Are you sure it wasn't because you've got an Afro, wear a T-Shirt that says 'Harlem Gal' and love Hip-Hop music ? :unsure:

My mother would kill me, if I ever did something like that to my hair, when I told her I was dyeing my hair black, she glared at me for an hour, till I changed my mind.
