Pakistan Census 2017: Initial estimates put population at 210—220 million

This is why you need more regular census, at least every 10 years.

Last time I checked China is building every damn thing in Pakistan under CPEC, from roads to dams to schools etc

Damn there's a huge Difference between Funding the Project and making it...

They will claim govt of Pakistan did to oppress SIndhis

This time you just need CNIC or other documents to be counted. If census team somehow missed millions of people then they just need to come forward and show with CNIC that they are not in census. Very easy to verify now days unlike in past census which were done without any help from IT. We just need to wait for few weeks for initial numbers.

ECP have decided to hold 2018 election based on 1998 census, so political parties will have 5 years to fight till 2023 over census.

(Web Desk) - The sixth Housing and Population Census reached its successful completion on 24th May 2017. The census was held after a delay of almost 19 years after the planned census of 2008 which was delayed due to deteriorating law and order situation. The census in Pakistan is a decennial one; it is to be held after every ten years. Unfortunately, for various political reasons and crises, census operations have not been carried out after every ten years. Previous census operations in Pakistan have been held in 1951, 1961, 1972, 1981 and 1998. The 2017 census is the first one to be held in Pakistan after the census of 1998. The census operations are carried out by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

The 2017 Census was conducted in two phases, with the first phase covering 11 divisions of the four provinces and the federal capital while the rest of the divisions were covered in the second phase. Due to the prevailing law and order situation in the country, civilian enumerators carrying out census operations were provided with security by soldiers of the Pakistan Army and police. Moreover, this census also included the counting of transgenders and Afghan refugees, who were not counted in previous census operations.

Although the field operations of the 2017 Census are over, the final enumeration of the data is still under process and numbers and figures will not be released for some time. According to Federal Bureau of Statistics Census Operations Coordinator Habibullah Khattak, 24th May marked the completion of the operations and was reserved for the counting of homeless people. Moreover, Khattak informed BBC Urdu that increasing the duration of the Census period was not under consideration as the work had reached its successful completion.

Initial estimates:

According to initial estimates given by non-government and unofficial sources, the population of Pakistan is likely to be 21-22 crores. This is an increase of more than 7 crores from the population of Pakistan as established by the 1998 census. Furthermore, this is an increase of almost 2 crores from numbers given by economic surveys recently. The Economic Survey of 2016-2017 established that Pakistan’s population is roughly 19 crores out of which 10 crore were men while 9 crore were women. According to the survey, roughly 8 crore people resided in urban areas while 11 crore resided in rural areas. The report of the survey denoted that there is one doctor for every 997 persons, one dentist for 10658 persons, and one hospital bed for 1584 persons. It remains to be seen whether these figures regarding facilities per person will improve according to Census 2017. As the initial estimates suggest, with Pakistan crossing the 20-crore mark, it has joined the group of five countries whose population is more than 20 crores; China, India, United States, Indonesia and Brazil.

(Note: 1 crore = 10 million)

This is a bad news for Pakistan, except that every per capita things will be lowered than previous estimate it will make harder to stabilize Pakistan's population below 300 million now.Per capita wise Pakistan is about to enter the list of water stressed country in the world. It will have detrimental impact on agriculture, food security, education, health, poverty, terrorism and a host of other issues.Only way left is to conduct a vigorous family planning campaign and reduce fertility rate below 2 as early as possible.

Its just a number, few million here and there will not make difference. Real figures will be close to 200 million estimate by government. Census doesn't just count people but also provide data on poverty which can be used by governments to better spend their development budgets. The only interesting thing is how much urban population have increased, some believe now 50% of Pak population live in cities.

.
IR Pakistan's population is fine. Even with a 400 million population, I don't think Pakistan will face problems - given the population density.
By your logic, Australia can fit 4 billion people, Canada 5 billion and Russia 9 billion! They will have same density as Pakistan with 400 million.

It is just a matter of density.

There is a difference. Correct. Indian company (L&T) hiring foreign consultants to build an airport in India is different from Chinese companies hiring Chinese consultants to build roads, sewage, schools in Pakistan. Indian money (from govt ) goes back to to India (to L&T) with NO interest and NO returns, while Pakistani money (from govt) goes to China (Chinese contractors) with interest AND return.

Yes, because India does not have technical know-how of building a bullet train network. something that only a handful of countries have mastered thus far.

Glad we are not outsourcing road and power plants to Japan.

Anyways, Japan is offering the loan at just 0.5% and the repayment period is 50 years, and there is no two way about the numbers as EVERYTHING is in public and can be found on govt's website. Compare this with what your all weather ally China is offering for CPEC, IF it has been made public by your govt

Doyal bhai,

Well, at least two Muslim countries Iran and your own country (take a bow, sir!!!) have already shown the way!. Not by coercive techniques like China but by investing in basic healthcare, sanitation and education, particularly female literacy.
