Muslim Woman Fired From Work For Wearing Hijab In US

Najaf said she would likely refuse an offer to return to the dental office.

WASHINGTON: In a case of alleged discrimination in the US, a young Muslim woman was fired from her job at a dental clinic for wearing a hijab as her employer wanted to keep a "neutral environment" in office.

Najaf Khan, who was hired as a dental assistant at Fair Oaks Dental Care in Fairfax County, Virginia, said she was fired from the new job because she wore a Muslim head scarf to work.

"I was really upset. The day that it happened, I was devastated," Najaf told NBC Washington.

She did not wear the hijab for her interview or on the first two days of employment. On the third day, she chose to wear it because Najaf felt that she would stay at the job and wearing it was part of her spiritual journey.

At work that day, she said the owner of Fair Oaks Dental Care, Dr Chuck Joo, told her to take off the hijab.

Joo told her that they wanted to keep a "neutral environment" in office. The employer asked her to remove it because the Islamic head scarf would offend patients and he wanted to keep religion out of the office.

Khan said Joo gave her an ultimatum -- she could continue wearing the scarf and be fired or work without it.

"When I said that I would not compromise my religion for that, he held the door open for me and I walked out," Khan said.

Joo was quoted as saying that open displays of religion are not allowed at his business because he wants to keep it neutral. If his employees want to wear a hat, it must be a surgical hat for sanitary reasons, Joo said.

Reacting to the case, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) said, "No employee should face termination because of his or her faith or religious practices. We call on Fair Oaks Dental Care to reinstate the Muslim employee and to offer her reasonable religious accommodation as mandated by law."

Najaf said she would likely refuse an offer to return to the dental office.

"I was astonished because he (boss) had been saying I had been doing so well. I received an email Friday morning (July 29) saying how much positive enthusiasm I was bringing into the dental office," she told Fox News.

Thats a scam, if on interview she did not wore a hijab, and started wearing from third day after joining.

How can one wear such a outfit in working enviroment ?

.
I want the West to ban all these Sikhs wearing turbans... they look like terrorists ... *sarc*

Nothing wrong , agree with his views or opinions.
wearing it was part of her spiritual journey.
Well it is called employment not spirtual journey. For spirtual journey she needs to go to religious place not office.

Well no employee should bring religion to office as well. Office deals with person not with his faith.

Would you say the same for sikhs?

even though its not fair but its his office and however he wants nothing wrong with it but think this way. its very positive for her. Allah saved her. she chose religion over job and remember its was test for her. she passed test and after every test theres a reward. she's very lucky to pass this test. remember we are here for test not for stay.

By your own standards, Sikhs should not be allowed to wear TURBAN in place of work.

State that publicly or you are nothing but a HYPOCRITE.

Your comment is just an excuse to let the guy off.

neutrality on religion isn't the absence of religion, it is simply treating all religions the same; with this in mind, she had every right to wear it, if the employer didn't like it, its his own damn problem.

If anyone is offended by the hijab, you probably shouldn't be catering to them anyway.

why only for sikhs its for everybody. No offense but I dont know why you ppl think we are out to get you.

Sikhs wearing turban does not affect their ability to discharge their work effectively. The turban is inconspicuous unless you want to focus on that. If wearing turban interferes with their work, I believe they would be left with no choice. At the same time I am not for sikhs carrying weapons as it might end up being used in moment of rage and also make them inaccessible to areas where security check is prevalent . You need to apply discretion on which is right and wrong.

This lady is a dentist who needs to interact with clients. If she was engineer who works alone in a cubicle ppl what she wears would make no difference whatsoever.

If some one known to me wears a hijab , I would have no hesitation in having a conversation for knowing well she is a friendly person. But for a stranger it simply says dont make contact with me. Hijab might look like a simple case which might not warrant any attention but ppl will always relate it to burqa and other stuff. Its a problem of your own making.
It is this very same reason that we are asked to wear uniforms in school to ensure every one is treated equally with no discrimination.

By the way there is a million hindu customs which needs to be followed but most of them are not suited to modern world. Take for example not cross the seas, dont eat meat /clip nails or hairs on certain days ...etc

Most of the institutions provide enough freedom for every faith, we need to ensure that it is not taken to far extreme.

Its not only turban , they also need to carry kirpan. But do you see them carrying any where?
If you cannot adjust to the modern worlds needs its your problem. What if the employer says please wear uniform ?
How would that go? then you also lose the freedom of wearing which dress you want. ppl are adults not kids who should be instilled with strict discipline. They have freedom to make wise choices.

If she would have weared the hijab the first day,he wouldnt have hired her,she is at fault here.

This is where the lady made an error.

If the turban covered the face ..yes
I want the West to ban all these Sikhs wearing turbans... they look like terrorists ... *sarc*

Look like terrorists !! What do terrorists look like ?

Those who flew their aircraft into the twin towers did not ' look ''like terrorists or did they ?

If the office has a no religious symbol policy then yes the turban will not be allowed. BTW no sikh will come without the Turban on day of interview and 2 subsequent days and then on third day suddenly wear the turban.

If wearing the hijab was part of her "Spiritual Journey" she should have worn it at the time of Interview itself. It would have been clear to her that the "Spiritual Journey" did not pass through that office.

If anyone is offended by the hijab, you probably shouldn't be catering to them anyway.

That is exactly what he is doing. He is offended/not comfortable with the hijab and asking her to leave - that is not catering to her

In US citizens live as per rules of US constitution and not be Islamic rules, if you want to be in US, be like a US citizen.

"Abba ka raaj nahi chalta US main, Jo marzi kar lo pahan lo.."

Find a job in Arabic countries or a mosque. You guys are so ashamed of what God has made you that you have to hide it from everyone else. There's a difference between decency and ashamed.
