Tata Nano Sales Rebound From Record Low as Warranty, Financing Win Buyers

Tata Motors Ltd.’s sales of the Nano, the world’s cheapest car, rebounded in December from a record low after the automaker more than doubled warranty lengths and offered easier financing terms.

Sales rose to 5,784 from 509 in November, according to a statement from the Mumbai-based automaker today. The December tally, a 60 percent increase from a year earlier, was below the 9,000 monthly sales record achieved in July.

Tata has begun television advertisements, added more sales points in smaller towns and introduced a 99 rupee ($2)-a- month maintenance option to help revive sales of the Nano, which costs as little as 137,555 rupees in New Delhi. Sales had fallen on a month-on-month basis since July because of price increases and safety concerns following at least three fires.

“Tata Motors is now focusing on the Nano because its reputation is riding on it,” said Umesh Karne, a Mumbai-based analyst with BRICS Securities Ltd., who has a ‘buy’ rating on the stock. “Measures such as easy financing and the maintenance offer have reassured customers.”

The automaker in December lengthened warranties to four years or 60,000 kilometers (37,282 miles) and added the maintenance plan. The company opened a factory in June with the capacity to build 250,000 Nanos a year.

Tata’s total vehicle sales, including trucks and buses, rose 31 percent from a year earlier in December to 67,441, according to the statement.

Second-Best Performer

The automaker in November said it would retrofit Nano cars with additional protection in exhaust and electrical systems after the fires. Investigations concluded that the reasons for the fires were “specific” to the cars involved, the company has said.

Tata Motors rose 0.6 percent to 1,308.35 rupees in Mumbai trading yesterday. The shares gained 65 percent last year, the second-best performer in the benchmark Sensitive Index of the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The November sales tally was the lowest for the Nano since the 624-cc car went on sale in 2009. Ratan Tata, the automaker’s chairman, decided to develop the car after seeing a family riding on a scooter.

The Nano is currently sold in 12 Indian states as the company works through initial orders and ramps up production. Tata expects to begin nationwide sales by March.

tata's indica car(v1) was horrible in quality especially the body metallurgy.. underbody/side fender rusting was common for the first batch 98-2002 .

indica v2 turbomax(BS-IV) is a good car considering turbo diesel engine which can do 2lakh kms in rural Indian conditions with mileage which is eye-popping 20-24kmpl at highways. indica first gave Indians value for money car with proper space to "fit" in especially rear passengers. japanese cars have non-existent leg room for rear passengers and it always looks weird when 6ft guy tries to enter a jap car squeezes him inside cars like swift for eg.

now Indica's are going to be sold in Russia If I'm Not Mistaken.


Tata vista and manza sedan are fine cars though. the problem is, tata dispatches cars without proper PDI(pre delivery inspections) and second quality materials finds space in new cars which ofcourse they will change under warranty when customers came for service. innovative way of cost cutting!

M&M should scale up and go into 'low-cost' mode with older models.

Sadly, M&M is doing exactly opposite by phasing out perfectly ok ppl.' s machines like Major (old avatar of the Thar here, see pic bleow), Commander (Strectch version, widely popular in rural India for Newspaper, Gas Cylinder delivery etc.).

I guess M&M's idea is to build on it's solid reputation and scale up prices mid-way between 2-hand market and foreign brands. Haram-khor bc-mc's, saale.

Otherwise, this would be the ideal platform to revert back to 100's of low-cost, bare-bones M&M platforms (chasis) and let 'body-builders' do the rest. M&M has the scale, pedigree and resources to go for the 'bottom-of-the-pyramid ' market with said mass models. With scale, say 1 Million, Rs 1 lakh ( lakhtakiya jeep:)) chassis sold, they can use the home advantage to take over the Global bottom-of-the-pyramid market too.

Otherwise, this is funny, M&M will be catering their shimmied up WW II surplus and legacy knock-offs to higher-class urban segment in India, while foreign Co.'s, GM-Wuling, Piaggio, Ford etc. target the bottom market. Same-same 'bottom-of- the- market scheme going on re: Tata with their Ace & Ace Variants, Atul Auto, Bajaj, Ashok, HM, Premier Auto (of Padmini Fiat fame) etc.

M&M pursuing a**-backward strategy. Diluting natural 1'st mover advantage re: home market. Silly, no? :tdown:

:bounce: 1 gud thing, production is full-on re: M and M electric Reva nxg. (Pic. below) The slick car costs less 3.5 lakh (~ Euro 5000), and @ least in EU, gets a ... hehe ... 'Green' discount/rebate of ~ Euro 5000.

Tata Nano was 1'st & still 'cheapest & best'.

2'nd, GM Beat coming. Reva nxr 3'rd, coming after only. (both not cheap at all).
Then Maruti-Suzuki, Hyundai said they'll entry the Indian micro-mini city car play also.
Bajaj ready, to enter soon. And now Piaggio, & this 1 even comes with 1 hybrid sh*t!
Newcomers like Indian conglomerates also looking to break-in to the new-new market.

Looks so modular, they could in India ... no-joke... sell it in parts.
Engines should be modular, actually ... looks like they are on to this idea with a 200 cc, 300 cc & 300 cc (hybrid). So 1 Lakh ($ 2000) for the base + 200 cc engine, y-not. w/0 rear window, or metal doors, or roof. Promotion, got married, got kids? Install roof, get metal doors, bigger engine. We are talking India, not some OECD state.

From marketing side, this is a gr8 'starter' product.

Toyota, VW, Renault, Nissan, Malaysian Proton etc. may jump-in in the future.

So India is the new-new car factory of the world. Never mind China's 'cut-paste' hang-up. From my experience, China don't do small city type micro-mini eco-vehicles. This is gr8 chance for ppl. like India to grab market share re: discontinuous tech; & boom catch up with the big boys. This 'tinny car' biz. was Jap game b4. Technically speaking, this 'tinny car' market can build giant car Co.'s, given that in another generation pure electric's will take over, size no matter.

Want to get into car biz.? Move, India side ...
