What's new

JF-17 test flight with ws-13 "taisan" engine.

is the core engine technology for the ws-15 going to be scaled down and used to make the ws-17 or it the ws-17 an upgrade of the ws-13 (sort of like a 117S al-31 engine vs a new 117 al-41 stealth engine bettween the su-35 and the t-50 pakfa)

The core of the WS-17 should be more closely related to that of the WS-15, since they all belong to the next gen turbofan engine.

Is it only the core that is different where the ws-17 seen as the answer to the f414epe; and upgrade of the 404/414

or completely new engine the PAF and PLAAF maintance crews and facilities will have to learn all over again in about 10 years time? (this might be an issue for jf-17 sales, just like the gripen ng is different from the gripen c/d, especially in engine technology)

Then why not develop WS13 further? Or is WS17 just an improved version of WS13? (like RD33 was improved into rd93?)

WS-17 is next gen, not a mere upgrade of WS-13.

It is likely a completely new engine, but it was still designed by China in a similar fashion.

So I don't think there will be a radical change in the maintenance procedure.

Special thanks to @khanasifm for bringing this up.

Paris Air Show 2015: JF-17 fighter flying with indigenous Chinese turbofan - IHS Jane's 360

A senior Chinese aviation official has revealed that the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation FC-1/JF-17 fighter co-developed with Pakistan has been test-flown with a new Chinese medium-thrust turbofan engine.

Li Yuhai, an executive vice president with the Aviation Industries Corporation of China (AVIC), told IHS Jane's at the Paris Airshow that a new Chinese turbofan for the J-17 has been "under testing," has completed "lab tests", and that "flight testing is in progress".

.
Hasn't the WS-13 been in a testing stage on the JF-17 for quite some time now?

When will it be installed on Pakistan's JF-17's?

.
WS-13 is a good engine. better than the RD-93. one less thing China has to rely on.

It has been rumored to be in testing aboard the JF-17, but no validation until now. This also confirms that the WS-13 program is alive and well for the upcoming revised variant of the J-31.

Will it be installed on the future JF-17 units of PAF? Also what are the improvements of WS-13 over RD93 (sorry for the noob question but i don't know too much about WS-13)?

Frankly, informationg regarding the engine is extremely scarce. But from previous rumors, yes, the WS-13 is slated for the JF-17 and J-31 jets. There might be an upgraded variant, one that brings the original thrust to approximately 100 kN.

.
But still it seems unlikely for Block-2 Thunders since PAF is already really content with RD-93s. WS-13 will probably be installed on Block-3
