JF-17 test flight with ws-13 "taisan" engine.

@ChineseTiger1986 : Is the schedule still on for WS-13A to be ready to be fitted to production JF-17 by 2016?

It is likely much quicker than the adoption rate of the WS-10 engine for J-10B as the production units of the WS-10 family have been mostly consumed by those twin-engine aircrafts such as J-11B/J-15/J-16.

.
are the WS-13/17 engines able to be retrofitted to the current JF-17 in operation with the PAF, or are there structural modifications required?

.
From Chinese article, it claim the max thrust as 94KN

. .
It seems to still be in testing. Once development is finished, and the platform has matured, it will be a big boost for the JF-17s, allowing it to theoretically carry a bigger payload. However, until then, Pakistan will continue to use the RD engine.

.
it probably would be best if the PAF, now that it operated a few squadrans, to figure a way to make maintaince as simiple as possible in a manner similar to the gripen, simplify the parts

but try to get the weight down, allowing the plane to use the new added thrust; a better TWR, better agility

Hi,

JF 17 is a modular design. Unlike the aircraft of the 60s which were designed around the engine, it is the other way around.
R
New engines in test phase are designed with jf17 in mind. So there will be some modifications, but no major change.

. . .
120 kn is very impressive; any indication the aircraft weight will be decreased or at least stay the same (stay the same while new sensors are added) through use of higher percentage of composities?

current loaded weight of approximately 20,000lb, and a 120kn (~27,000 lb) engine would give a twr of 1.35
great for dogfighting

except that thrust rating is NOT for WS-13, which is what we're going to see on thunder. If ever.

"WS-17 for sure, it is a next gen medium thrust jet engine with an afterburner thrust of 120kN and a TWR of 10 at least."
-ChineseTiger1986

it is what is planned according to ChineseTiger1986, it might take 10 years to become fully operational, but if its in the works and the PAF needs it, it will push for it (if the money is there, the product will follow)

.
Say around 2025 to be ready to be fitted onto production J-31?

A WS-17 equipped J-31 should be able to take on F-22.

Maybe somewhere between 2020-2025, and let's see.

Since WS-15 might be operational by 2018-2020, so it is possible that WS-17 may take a bit longer than that.

is the core engine technology for the ws-15 going to be scaled down and used to make the ws-17 or it the ws-17 an upgrade of the ws-13 (sort of like a 117S al-31 engine vs a new 117 al-41 stealth engine bettween the su-35 and the t-50 pakfa)
