India plans to increase defense spending by 17 percent for the next financial year, as the country seeks to modernize its armed forces to keep pace with China’s military buildup and counter traditional rivals.

Total expenditure on the country’s armed services is set to rise to 1.93 trillion rupees ($40 billion) this year, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told parliament today as his delivered the country’s annual budget. China announced plans last month to increase spending by 11.2 percent this year to meet the country’s expanding global commitments.

India’s internal security threats and rivalries with Pakistan and China, the nuclear-armed neighbors with which it has border disputes, have driven a tripling in defense spending over the last decade.

India, which is the world’s largest arms importer, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, is currently negotiating with Dassault Aviation SA (AM) to buy 126 warplanes in the world’s biggest fighter-jet purchase in 15 years.

Translation: buy even more foreign weapons. :woot:

unlike russia, india have no domestic military industry where in an arms race the money goes directly into building indigenous weapons. instead, india will have to buy every single piece of weapon from foreign countries.

india is going the way of the soviet union, minus the indigenous military industrial complex and minus the global influence.

Thats pretty new to me. Soviet Union was also the largest Arms IMPORTER!!!??? Well anyways, If I may just educate you that R&D and Military budget are Two-Two Things. We have a good Military budget and a Moderate R&D budget too. Ours is a pretty wise economy, instead of wasting time and resources on R&D by compromising the defense budget, we prefer to Import the machine and the technology which helps us save time and money in R&D, so Indian R&D with say $20billion USD and Import with TOT worth $20USD is equal or more than a developing nation which invests $100USD on R&D and buying its own machines with another $100USD..

. . .
so pax sinica and now you confessed there is no problem.

good.

Believe me, this is the very LAST thing that any Chinese member here will have a problem with.

India spending more money on foreign weapons, and less on their economy and indigenous defence industries, is absolutely good news for us.

. .
does anyone know that for every arms purchase, upto 50% of the money should be invested back in india itself?

.
India's current GDP growth is 6.1%.

And they are increasing their defence budget by 17%.

that increase of 17% still makes 1.9% of gdp figure which has been historic allocation

Now the real increase in allocation in term of gdp infrastructure investment (defined as electricity, roads and bridges, telecommunications, railways, irrigation, water supply and sanitation, ports, airports, storage and oil-gas pipelines) would be increased from about 8% of GDP to about 10% of GDP

Rural Drinking water and sanitation to get Rs 30 billion more with the allocation Rs 140 billion representing 27% hike.

Rs 3,124 crore provided for Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) representing an increase of 29 per cent. (for Education at rural level)

17 percent hike in the budgetary allocation for education with an increased spending on the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) programme aimed at universaliztion of elementary education.

Healthcare spending to be increased from Rs.26,897 cr to Rs. 30,702 an increase of 14%.
