Today India, thanks to white revolution, is No.1 milk producer in world.

It is also 6th largest automobile producer, 4th largest steel producer(we produce more steel than Germany and Russia) and 2nd largest Cement Producer in world(next only to China)

India is a poor country (lower middle income group), innovation requires money. Given the constraints India has 66 is not that bad. Innovation requires a lot of capital and infrastructure. India as a country is still worried about how to feed half its population. As the economy grows, country becomes richer innovation will increase too.

India does well in the Lower Middle Income group, its ranked 3rd. Mind you though India at($1500) is still in the lower spectrum of the lower middle income country bracket ($1,036-$4,085).

India ranks 11th overall in innovation efficiency and 31st overall(4th in middle income group) in quality of innovation. So we can safely say that we have a strong base and are on the right path. With stable government and consistent growth in economy breaking into the top 20 shouldn't be that hard.
