West coast is full of soyboys and weebs.
I don’t mean laziness in traditional sense. I mean they can try harder to survive in western civilization instead returning to the motherland. Certainly it’s the most easy way. If I was chinese maybe I would do the same. Don’t know. One may argue that the Chinese people are not the most hardworking bunch in the world, but laziness is never part of our culture.
This was a foregone conclusion at some point.
I believe Western Universities also have China campuses nowadays - especially in medical and other high technology fields.
Soon kids from the US will be applying to Chinese elite universities.
US students have been attending Japanese universities for decades, especially from the US West Coast.

That's unlikely to change anytime soon due to the language barrier.
Why they have to "try harder to survive in western civilization", if they can have a better living standard and a brighter future in their motherland?
All the kids that went to Japanese universities came back fluent in Japanese, same will happen to kids going to Chinese schools.
Education is not just about solving a math problem or science problem. When you say an educated man you mean a person who has a moral framework where he can judge a right from wrong and who has enough understanding of the basic facets of civilization (state/economy/science/math etc) so he can smoothly and productively function. In other words a gentleman. it does not necessarily come school/university system though.
You don't go to a foreign country for college if you don't even speak the local language. It's that simple. You may as well spend your time stumbling around trying to understand the local's Portuguese on a trip to São Tomé and Príncipe.
Some people here have this "superior" euro-centric view and mindset and look down on China.
I'd say most of these people are hardcore "know-nothing" MAGA folks and have never even seen pictures of China.
They don't even realize that the soil has moved away from under them.
Resisting change will only make the resisters suffer, They will be left behind as history's detritus.
The daughter of one of my relatives graduated from Northeastern Univ. in Boston with a finance degree a couple of years ago. She started working in New York City with a $50K annual pay, but her parents still had to pay $3000 per month for her small apartment in better part of NYC. She then took a job offer from Alibaba with a starting pay RMB 200K ($31K) last year. Now she is the supervisor in her team, making RMB350K ($54K). Living in the safety of Hangzhou and with endless night life options there, she couldn't be happier.
For new generation of Chinese overseas students, "working hard to survive in western civilization" is not an attractive option at all. Openning a Hair Salon or a restaurant is just so "Last Century".

The day when an entitled Caucasian guy with a high-school education and an Asian guy with a Ph.D. will be paid the same, is GONE.
The first few semesters in a Japanese or Chinese university are used to school foreigners in local language (and culture).
Just like the US expects foreign students to do. There is already I believe a basic Chinese equivalent of the TOEFL.
Basic getting around phrases in Mandarin aren't that hard. Just like any other language.
I'm pretty sure those days never existed. Unless you are talking about people in other countries.
I don't remember any Brazilians (back then it was South Americans everywhere and very few Asians) I met in my college talking about getting any special schooling due to them being foreigners. If people are now getting hand-held for a few semesters then that is news to me.
