Chinese graduates lament Western degrees no longer a fast track for top jobs, employers prefer local degrees

US leader.

West coast is full of soyboys and weebs.

"Normal" people live here too. Cost of living, sophistication and living standard are way above the rest of the US, except maybe Atlantic Seaboard.

California would be the 7th largest economy of the world, if it was a separate country. It has a gross domestic product of $2.3 trillion.

And it is a bridge between Asia and the US. Economically as well as culturally.

One may argue that the Chinese people are not the most hardworking bunch in the world, but laziness is never part of our culture.
I don’t mean laziness in traditional sense. I mean they can try harder to survive in western civilization instead returning to the motherland. Certainly it’s the most easy way. If I was chinese maybe I would do the same. Don’t know.

.
This was a foregone conclusion at some point.

I believe Western Universities also have China campuses nowadays - especially in medical and other high technology fields.

Soon kids from the US will be applying to Chinese elite universities.

US students have been attending Japanese universities for decades, especially from the US West Coast.

That's unlikely to change anytime soon due to the language barrier.

Why they have to "try harder to survive in western civilization", if they can have a better living standard and a brighter future in their motherland?

Education is not just about solving a math problem or science problem. When you say an educated man you mean a person who has a moral framework where he can judge a right from wrong and who has enough understanding of the basic facets of civilization (state/economy/science/math etc) so he can smoothly and productively function. In other words a gentleman. it does not necessarily come school/university system though.

All the kids that went to Japanese universities came back fluent in Japanese, same will happen to kids going to Chinese schools.

Is this a bad thing for business? Only luddites would say this is bad. Like I say, writing is on the wall...

Some caucasian folks here in the US have this "superior" euro-centric view and mindset and look down on China.

I'd say most of these people are hardcore "know-nothing" MAGA folks and have never even seen pictures of China.

They don't even realize that the soil has moved away from under them.

Resisting change will only make the resisters suffer, They will be left behind as history's detritus.

Just as an example, lately this has really exemplified in rambunctious and rude passenger behavior in the US. Just look at the superior entitled behavior of this Caucasian guy and you can see that these guys are not liking the "new normal" where they have equal rights with the rest of the diverse US population, rather than being entitled to be treated "special". A Male Karen, if you will...

You don't go to a foreign country for college if you don't even speak the local language. It's that simple. You may as well spend your time stumbling around trying to understand the local's Portuguese on a trip to São Tomé and Príncipe.

Moving goalposts in a conversation will not change the fact that one needs a basic BA education as a foundation to back up morality in a societal situation.

The problem with today's America is that high-school educated people think they can lead society. BS of the highest order.

Basic education (at the very least a bachelors) is needed to function in society and make the right EDUCATED judgment calls.

The day when an entitled Caucasian guy with a high-school education and an Asian guy with a Ph.D. will be paid the same, is GONE.

The world has changed.

The first few semesters in a Japanese or Chinese university are used to school foreigners in local language (and culture).

Just like the US expects foreign students to do. There is already I believe a basic Chinese equivalent of the TOEFL.

Basic getting around phrases in Mandarin aren't that hard. Just like any other language.

The daughter of one of my relatives graduated from Northeastern Univ. in Boston with a finance degree a couple of years ago. She started working in New York City with a $50K annual pay, but her parents still had to pay $3000 per month for her small apartment in better part of NYC. She then took a job offer from Alibaba with a starting pay RMB 200K ($31K) last year. Now she is the supervisor in her team, making RMB350K ($54K). Living in the safety of Hangzhou and with endless night life options there, she couldn't be happier.

For new generation of Chinese overseas students, "working hard to survive in western civilization" is not an attractive option at all. Openning a Hair Salon or a restaurant is just so "Last Century".

My thoughts exactly.

If you have opportunities at home, why waste your talents in the West, being essentially a 2nd class citizen?

Better for your own country as well as your own family.

@Hamartia Antidote, here is an ad for the OCT (Oral Chinese Test) to qualify for Mandarin proficiency. This is the Chinese equivalent for TOEFL I was talking about.

Maybe one of the Chinese brothers/sisters here can confirm if it is accepted in all Chinese Higher Education institutions since the results and certificate come directly from the Ministry of Education in China. Maybe @Dungeness brother can please confirm.

The animation by the way was done by a local studio in Bangladesh. There is a thriving animation industry locally and online game development is also a specialty.

I'm pretty sure those days never existed. Unless you are talking about people in other countries.

I don't remember any Brazilians (back then it was South Americans everywhere and very few Asians) I met in my college talking about getting any special schooling due to them being foreigners. If people are now getting hand-held for a few semesters then that is news to me.

Well those who came to the US as foreign students in undergrad all had to take either a TOEFL before getting here, or had to make it up with a few English proficiency courses after getting here. It was and is a requirement. If you're a native, you didn't have to do this.

Likewise it will be Mandarin proficiency for those English-speaking students who go into Chinese Universities.
