Army orders ALCOTAN Shoulder Fired Anti Tank Weapon System

Another short-sighted procurement. Guessing it happened only because a relative of a general started his own "company" and "local partnership" of an old throw-away system was needed. A system that's already a generation old is being billed as something that it's not.

The targeting system is reusable but the firing system/tube is single shot. We are getting 158 targeting systems with 1413 ALCOTAN AT (M2) shots. Once fired, the tube is discarded, it comes factory fitted with the projectile and is not meant to be reloaded.

Instalaza C90 90mm Disposable Anti-Tank Rocket Launcher
Spanish military industry has produced many indigenous solutions to local requirements throughout the decades, proving itself a capable player on the world stage. Instalaza SA, founded during World War 2 in 1943, specializes in the field of infantry-level weaponry and developed the MAT-120 mortar cluster munition system, Alhambra hand grenade, and the C90 series of anti-tank Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) weapons. The latter is a 90mm caliber, single-shot anti-armor solution that entered service with the Spanish Army, Marines, Air Force and Guardia Civil. It has also found a home in the inventories of Colombia, Ecuador, Estonia, India, Italy (special forces), Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The C90 system includes a collapsible fiberglass/plastic launch tube with integrated optics fit and shoulder strap. Overall weight is 4.8 kilograms and its length reaches 940mm. The projectile is a 90mm munition featuring a tandem High-Explosive (HE) warhead with an effective range out to 300 meters. The 2x optical sight can help the operator engage a moving target in either day or night. The CR-90 family is similar in most respects to the American M72 LAW, both being fired from the shoulder and disposable after single use.

The idea behind the Alcotan is to consider the rocket and rocket-launcher as one munition. It's like a bullet-and-gun being the same thing - once the bullet is gone, you throw away the gun. It might seem like a backwards idea, but I think Instalaza made the launch system cheap enough to be disposable and light/compact enough to compare with just having the rockets. The other advantage is that if one launcher fails, you move onto the next one and the next without worrying about abandoning your rounds.

Sir, the cheaper the rockets are, the more expensive the targeting system is. If each rocket costs approx. 8000 USD then each targeting system costs approx. 80000 USD. If you make the rockets cheaper, the targeting system will only get more expensive. This is something to be used at infantry level. Imagine if each rifle cost 80000 USD. The costs are untenable. Now imagine if troops need to make a strategic retreat and leave behind some equipment. You are gifting more than 80000 USD to the enemy. Operationalizing this throughout the army will make us bankrupt. The system doesn't make financial sense except if I am missing something.

An outdated system being purchased under sole proprietorship by the Pakistan Army. Its local agent company is Metal Engineering Works Private Limited in Karachi. Initially the system was rejected during technical evaluation by IOA but later because of intervention of a particular serving Major General it was not only approved but a team from Army led by that General went to Spain to see the tests and came back to process it on a fast track basis. No other system was considered in competition. C90 made by the same manufacturer is being used by India and it also has been used against Pakistani forces in the past on the border by the Indians. The entire deal smells of pockets being filled. Pakistan will be getting a bad deal just because a few want to fill their pockets. Very Sad

Correction:

C90 is being replaced by ALCOTAN hence C90 is outdated system not Alcotan.

Correction: C90 is still in production by Instalaza. India is using C90 as well and has not replaced it with ALCOTAN 100 until todate. Pakistan is buying ALCOTAN 100 for the first time.

Alcotán-100 is a recoilless, one-man portable, single-use anti-tank rocket launcher used by infantry, manufactured by Instalaza.[1] It is in service with the Spanish Military, where it is gradually replacing the C-90.

C90-CR (M3)

Effective firing range 300 m moving target

Alcotán-100
Maximum firing range 600 meters

I'm not sure how you got to the sight and rocket correlation.

The Alcotan's integrated targeting system (VOSEL M2) is like an optional sight, it's attachable and removable with each Alcotan munition (i.e. rocket + launcher). Once the munition is used, it is discarded and the same sight (VOSEL M2) is removed and used with the next rocket. The sight is an independent entity; if the Army chose the Saab Carl Gustaf M4 (assuming Sweden is willing it), it would need a sight for that too.

.
Two completely different systems, neither is replacing the other. Different usage, calibre, weight etc...

Should've went with the Chinese PF-98. Better in every way. More versatile. Better range, lighter, heavier warhead.

.
So a weapon which went out of production ten years ago was purchased.
Wonder whose fat pockets were lined for this??

Although in retrospect, it may be a genuine find of a decent weapon.
That we will never know
In every deal someone is making BIG money. Why can't these systems be developed locally. It is far more simpler than SLCMs and ALCMs. Or at least get the latest system on ToT basis.

C90 is a rocket launcher produced in 80s.

ALCOTAN is its replacement.

The basic systems have "general" characteristics, but things like penetration, range also depend on the missile/rocket used.

ALCOTAN M2 also uses different warheads for different role (see my previous post on page 1).

CrM3 etc are warheads used by C90.

Which (C90) has been replaced by ALCOTAN.
Finally , confusion resolved, Pakistan is getting the newer version (ALCOTAN) which replaced C-90 , good development
