Afghan president: US wants to keep 9 bases after combat troops finish withdrawal in 2014

President Hamid Karzai has announced that the United States intended to maintain nine military bases in the country after the formal withdrawal of forces in 2014, signaling Washington’s decision to maintain a significant military profile in Kabul for at least a decade.

US Response?

A senior U.S. official familiar with the talks told The Associated Press earlier that the U.S. and Karzai are at odds over his request that the United States guarantee that it would side with Afghanistan if neighboring Pakistan poses a threat. So far, the U.S. is refusing, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

The negotiations over a security agreement have been protracted and at times acrimonious, reflecting Washington’s relationship with Karzai.

As a result, the U.S. put the agreement on hold.

USA knows Karazai doesn't want to die like Najibullah.

so he will eventually agree to US conditions.

Oh and the bag fulls of dollars from CIA will surely grease the palms as well.

He is running scared that his A$$ will be GRASS after the US and NATO leave in 2014, because the Afghan Taliban will hunt his A$$ down and hang him by his Kahones. His best bet is to make peace with Pakistan. Although I seriously doubt this Schizophrenic Character and his Drug Warlord Brother have a prayer left.
