Why do Indian restaurants serve Muslim food?

India has marketed itself pretty good and almost all food of South Asians origin is known as indian food abroad.
All Pakistani food even the himalayan pink salt is labelled as indian.
There is nothing that can be done by Pakistanis regarding this now.

The menu of almost all Indian restaurants in the West is full of endless list of meat items like Kebab, Tandoori, Korma, so on

Because nearly 95% of these 'Indian' restaurents are ran by Pakistani's or Bangladeshi's but because they think their own identities are so na-pak that they use the more attractive name India.

Agreed regarding food, but not pink salt, pretty much everyone knows pink salt is usually Pakistani, this is because of a lot of recent videos from eg. foodinsider etc online that display it as Pakistani. food agreed, even Pakistani restaurants and Pakistani owners always put their food as Indian & Pakistani, or just indian, one way or another, same from Bengali and Nepalese restaurants. However recently Ive been seeing people differentiate between Indian and Pakistani and Bengali foods, however that is minuscule.

I didn't conduct a survey. Just mentioned what I have observed - from ordering delivery food and going to restaurants.



Actually the majority of Pakistani owned restaurants (from my experience) do call themselves Pakistani, or Lahori, Peshawari, or Karachi food. I just remember coming across the odd Pakistani restaurant being classed under "indian food" on delivery apps.



See my comment above re Pakistani restaurants. Bangladeshi ones I don't know why they do it.

Hindu food? What is that?
There is regional cooking and it changes across the entire subcontinent. Hindus eat non vegetarian food too and in some regions majority is non vegetarian. People going bananas over Hindu and Muslim food appear a little ignorant.

The names are not only about cuisine. There is a string of Karachi Bakerys in Hyderabad. There are scores that have names from across. Do they serve bakery items from Karachi? I don’t think so.
In India the Northeast has a unique cuisine. It changes the flavour and contents as people travel westwards. By the time one reaches Punjab it transforms into something completely different. Same happens as one travels southward’s.

As far as the title of this thread goes, it is business sense to serve what sells. If non vegetarian stuff sells in some part of the world then that’s what people would sell.
Is there no one from this subcontinent in the western world who doesn’t sell western food? Should someone call for a ban on such people?

I guess this is the situation in UK which I'm not familiar with, but in North America every Indian restaurant, regardless of whoever runs it (Sikhs/Hindus/Muslims), serves very similar menu full of beef and mutton dishes, which have become "the face of Indian cuisine", and I find that kind of weird because Indians get killed for eating the same food back in India.

I have been to India and the food at high end eateries is excellent but to be honest I did avoid street food

Food is incredibly cheap here. The best Biryani can be had for the equivalent of $7-8.
Reviews on Google can be a good guide.

We kept it because when we started restaurant business we were part of British India. It was Muslims who popularized the brand called indian food. Nobody likes hindu food, indian food means food of indian Muslims. And it takes time to rebrand...

India is viewed with positive vibes, rich culture, diversity and mostly humble people by the west. Whereas Pakistan is viewed as a backward, angry, ultra religious and linked with terrorism by the west.
It's just the way it is.....!
Also most desi restaurants are successful here in France atleast. So I always feel good being an Indian abroad.... Always..!
