The original Han Chinese are people of Yellow river plains(Hwang Ho river). After they conquered they were forcefully assimilated as Han Chinese, southern China was still non-Han majority 1000 years ago and recently assimilated as Han Chinese in late Tang Dynasty around 10th century, thus prefer to call themselves as Tang Chinese.
