Why are we south asians so passionate about Only Cricket??
This is the most probable reason for poor performance of south asian nations in olympics and cwg
, I personally loved that India beaten Pakistan but look at pakistani fans, they have gone mad at their players and breaking TVs, Don't take me wrong, the same can be happen in India too, If Pakistan was the winner, remember wc 2003 defeat against Australia what was happened to The houses of players :D
So the question is that why can't we love the other sports, why we are still searching another dhyanchand, another mary kom, another milkha singh, another sania mirza?
And why we haven't got a single messi, a singhle michael schumaker, a single federer?
is Media culprit for creating too much hype or just the peoples??

mainly bcz they suck at other games , when was the last time india at-least qualified for football world cup.

i think if there is a consistent performance people will eventually start watching , at-least they will have their set of loyal audience . For example hockey is quiet popular in punjab while football is followed more than cricket in states like goa and bengal . To have that big national audience they will have to be right at the top . And we indians are known for our herd mentality , our choices are never diversified .

Because that the only major team game south Asians can actually win. :D You can't expect us to win football matches.

Because we cant win in football or motorsports on international levels

And why on earth is the media the culprit? They only show stuff we wanna see... thats how they make profit.

If you have followed the ISL, most of the stadiums were fully packed..We have lots of fans for football..We just need the quality..

On the contrary.. In Sri Lanka Rugby far outweighs Cricket in domestic competitions and popularity

.
Cause we don't have body types to play physical sports. This is why in Mahabharata and Ramayan archery is the most important in warfare. We aren't athletic enough for swordplay.

.
its an easy sport even those who are not fit enough to play hockey, soccer or basketball can still play cricket. I am talking about local level. So, you watch what you played as a child.

Not entirely true. It's just Colombo and Kandy but the rest of the country is obsessed with Cricket.

It's a shame. This game is only played by less than 10 countries and we waste so much money, time and effort for this.

I will always disagree with this "we are not physically fit to play sports like Football" argument. One can always adapt tactics to meet the physical stature of the players on the field. Take a look at the short Spanish football team for example who won the 2010 world cup and 2012 European cup despite playing teams with tall players such as Germany or Netherlands. Spanish players like Xavi, Iniesta, Santi Cazorla all are in the range of 168cm to 170cm. These are short guys but world class football players and that is because their national teams and club teams (Barcelona, Arsenal etc) play a fast paced short passing strategy which suits short players.

The real reason for why we do not produce quality players in sports other than cricket is because of our culture's in which parents have taken up an obligation of actively discouraging their children from ever considering sport as a career whilst pushing them to become doctors, engineers etc. This culture eventually emerges from the fact that there is no money involved in sports like football or athletics in our country's and parents understandably want their children to have a stable financial future. Cricket is the only sport that has big money involved hence it being the sole sport in which our countries excel. So ultimately it comes down to money. The talent is there, tactics can be adapted to meet the stature and skills of the players but the money isnt there. If we want to stop embarrassing ourselves in the Olympics in the future hence sportsmen need to be given dignified wages. The results will follow.

True and other sports are not even funded properly by the government (thaat includes lack of sporting facilities, trainers and infrastructure) They are virtually ignored by the general public. Massive popularity for cricket will only encourage young kids to see cricket as the only sport that's worth playing so there's very slim chance of kids choosing other sports. I am not saying cricket should be totally ignored. It's just that equal consideration should be given to other sports if not more.

Man you sure know how to tell the truth...1+

I think it is apart of the colonial legacy that South Asians have not shaken off yet. Look at how Cricket is mostly played in countries that were once colonized by Britain but rarely in countries that willingly accepted it. Big reason US rejected Cricket in early age because they didn't want a British influence sport rather American sports.
