What's new

why are we south asians so passionate about Cricket Only? :o:

Indo-Pak have been in other sports as well in the past like Hockey, Athletics but these days Cricket is Junoon :D

Man you sure know how to tell the truth...1+

I think it is apart of the colonial legacy that South Asians have not shaken off yet. Look at how Cricket is mostly played in countries that were once colonized by Britain but rarely in countries that willingly accepted it. Big reason US rejected Cricket in early age because they didn't want a British influence sport rather American sports.

thats right , it has also got a lot to do with british presence in south asia . That's our specialty isn't it we won't do anything by our-self , we would observe how they do it & later improvise on it :D

Why are we south asians so passionate about Only Cricket??
This is the most probable reason for poor performance of south asian nations in olympics and cwg
, I personally loved that India beaten Pakistan but look at pakistani fans, they have gone mad at their players and breaking TVs, Don't take me wrong, the same can be happen in India too, If Pakistan was the winner, remember wc 2003 defeat against Australia what was happened to The houses of players :D
So the question is that why can't we love the other sports, why we are still searching another dhyanchand, another mary kom, another milkha singh, another sania mirza?
And why we haven't got a single messi, a singhle michael schumaker, a single federer?
is Media culprit for creating too much hype or just the peoples??

We barely have enough infrastructure for any sports, kids learn football with any round object, cricket means as little as a ball and a bat, or even a piece of wood, how many actually have access to the sports played in olympic?

Cricket became a craze because somehow we did well in it, otherwise we don't have enough good fields to practice cricket or football also.

Indians passionate only about cricket? Nope! We are so full of passion that we can win the gold medal in producing babies too! (Lallu's made a whole bloody cricket team at home producing 11 offspring!) He gets the Medal of Honor for his virility too!

And there are thousands like him! We are world leaders - 1.2 billion passionate bimbos and still counting!! :D

Thanx for tagging me @Blue_Eyes and its a good question, i think cricket has got a bit of history in the subcontinent and it was introduced by the Britishers in the region right from that moment we are closer to it, and after the partition both indian and Pakistan adopted it , though Pakistan had some great moments in Hockey and squash as well, but still the masses loves cricket and sometimes i wonder why is hockey our nation game ??? we don't love hockey that much as we love cricket ...

India had won
six successive gold medals
from 1928–1956 in hockey.
So before partition I think WE won 4 successive gold in hockey at olympics, And this is the reason for hockey being our national game!
Now we are not good at hockey because of European dominance in hockey and they made rules according to their games and also the infrastructure is also good there.

@Blue_Eyes

i find cricket, football and hockey rather useless occupations... the last kirket match i saw was in 2004... there are so many problems in south asia and the world, people should spend time in removing them rather than sitting around tv and cheering for some people running about after a ball... i find the aggression of the spectators and the players rather strange because these are just group games... why can't they use the same aggression is fighting injustice??

i used to watch tennis because that game is lonely struggle, hours long.

and i will watch squash if dipika pallikal is playing. :D

Not entirely true. It's just Colombo and Kandy but the rest of the country is obsessed with Cricket.

It's a shame. This game is only played by less than 10 countries and we waste so much money, time and effort for this.

Spreading very fast mate.. Lots of corporate money top class club structures.. Semi professionalism.. Domestic cricket matches would be lucky to attract one quarter of the fans a high school Rugby match would.. Let alone a club fixture

Btw Cricket is such a overhyped minority sport.. Basically getting prominence because of India and it's massive fanatical fan base

forced acceptance ....Lets call it culture ya tradition....People hate change even if it is good for them :P

.
I thought pro kabaddi was very good this year.
We are doing better at other sports, chess being a good example.
Reasons for cricket
1 Colonial baggage
2 Mismanagement of other sports like hockey
3 Established infrastructure
4 Relatively risk free game with minimum investment at lower levels
5 Chance to win over rivals at a game they seem better at.

.
:D so what, that won't change my assumption about you, you are too serious and have complaints from all of the world lol :P
you weren't here when Olympics or common wealth games were on .. I opened dedicated threads with minute to minute updates.
