Two countries, two proposals, but the motive is one -- to keep China at bay and to contain and isolate Beijing. The United States and the United Kingdom both have announced the expansion of the G7 grouping. While the United States has proposed G7+4, the United Kingdom wants a G7+3, calling it '10 Democracies (D10)' which excludes Russia.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced postponing of the G7 Summit which was to be held later in June this year, calling it an “outdated” group that needs to incorporate other important and emerging democracies.

Speaking to reporters on board the Air Force One winging its way from Florida to Washington DC, Donald Trump said he is "postponing it until September" and plans to invite Russia, South Korea, Australia and India.

"I don't feel that as a G7 it properly represents what's going on in the world. It's a very outdated group of countries," Donald Trump said.

Founded in 1975, the G7 (group of seven) member states comprise France, Italy, Canada, Japan, Germany, the US, and the UK.

The United States holds the presidency of the G7 this year. Presidents in the past are known to invite heads of states or heads of governments of one or two countries to attend the summit as special invitees.

Last year, French President Emmanuel Macron had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 Summit held in the country which included eight more invitees: South Africa, Australia, Chile, Egypt, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Spain.

The thrust in the proposals is to bring in the important democracies in the world to counter China.

The United Kingdom government, on the other hand, has also proposed a plan to expand the G7 into the ‘D10’ with a specific aim to counter China’s monopoly in the 5G sphere and create alternative suppliers of 5G equipment and other technologies to avoid relying on Beijing.

A UK High Commission official told India Today TV, "The security and resilience of our networks are of paramount importance."

"Following the US announcement of additional sanctions against Huawei, the NCSC is looking carefully at any impact they could have to the UK's networks,” added the official.

The UK is collaborating with a number of international partners on a range of issues including cybersecurity.

According to reports, the British government had approached Washington about a “D10” club of democratic partners.

A day after the UK proposal, President Donald Trump announced the expansion of G7. Interestingly, the US list includes Russia. Whether if there will be consensus in the inclusion of Moscow is yet to be known.

. .
If would be slap in the face of Russia if Russia decides to join this new G-7 group since it was kicked out and humiliated from G-8. If Russia has little bit of self-respect it will laugh at this new proposal. As far as the other proposed countries are concerned like India, Australia, etc, their economies are in tatters, and about to go into recession. What are they going to do except arse wiping.

Little indians with really big mouths; this is the only quality you possess when you arrive on this planet, and until the very end! It is absolutely pathetic and shameful that you keep on comparing yourselves, a country of 1.3 billion, with a much smaller country of 200 Million. But when it comes to comparing to an equivalent country China, a country of 1.3 Billion, your arse gets whipped economically and militarily ! And what is even more shameless is that you then wonder around and come to PDF and spill your garbage here! What a shameless bunch of people.

So G7 and its American cheerleaders, because Russia won't be joining.

By including flawed democracies its not democratic, by excluding China its not economic, I dont see what the point of this organisation is other than to be some feel good committee for the west.

.
I don't get what US is trying to prove. Any organization of X + US is not more powerful than US by itself, since US is overwhelmingly stronger than any country except China (economically, militarily) and Russia (militarily). That means if you can deter the US you can deter X + US.

India may be invited to join the G-7 grouping if proposals by the US and the UK for its expansion are accepted by the other five members —- Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan and France. Senior officials of G-7 countries are expected to discuss the expansion in the weeks leading to a rescheduled summit in the US in September.

Seeking the entry of four countries in the G-7 with the express purpose of isolating China, US President Donald Trump said he would invite leaders of these nations – India, Russia, Australia and South Korea – as special invitees to the rescheduled G-7 summit. Three of these countries, barring Russia, are already partnering the US in a “Quad” grouping that aims to counter Chinese assertion in South China Sea. After being isolated at the previous two summits, Trump has called the grouping “outdated”.’

If the invites are sent, India will attend its second successive G-7 summit as a special invitee. Usually, special invitees, who also include chiefs of multilateral organisations, interact for about four hours with G-7 leaders over two sessions. Then PM Manmohan Singh along with then Chinese President Hu Jintao had attended five successive G-8 (Russia was then a member) summits from 2005 onwards as part of G-5, which also included Mexico, Brazil and South Africa.

After just over a decade, India is the only survivor from that G-5 club. The other G-5 members — China, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil – do not appear to be eligible for the global high table. Trump has suggested the inclusion of India, Australia, South Korea and Russia while the UK proposal wants the G-7 to exclude Russia and include the three democracies of India, Australia and South Korea.

When India hosted the BRICS summit, it had invited leaders from BIMSTEC countries instead of SAARC to keep out Pakistan.
