Chinese soaps also show joint families although this kind of TV program seldom in showing on chinese TV.

thanks for information. the reason is both china and India are fast growing economies witnessing 'husband wife and two kids' type family system where there are no elders ;at least in metro cities. but people still haven't forgotten joint family system. so soaps in both nations show joint family system. producers will show what people like.

Jana we have a free media. Our production houses make whatever they feel like be it reality TV or soap operas. Only control we have over them is through the Information and Broadcasting Ministry which keeps their content under check but even they refrain from going overboard with it or else, being a democracy, there will be a lot of hue and cry over 'how the govt. is trying to curtail the freedom of speech'.

Apart from that, we have really no control over them. It's for the people to decide what to watch and what to not watch.

As far as image of India is concerned, I think I can safely bet on the wisdom of the general public to not judge a country and its people by its TV serials. If some Indian TV serials are crap that doesn't mean India or Indian public is crap.

Indian TV serials are doing just what they are meant to do i.e. make money. They should not be taken for anything other than that.

2. as far as your statement that people should not judge a country by these soaps well you are right but technically we all know that these things influence opinion of the public and mostly portray the general thinking and mentality.

3. yes surely entertainment industry tends to market things which are sold widely but again it doesnt mean that one should resort to cheap ideas .

Our public here in Pakistan do watch these crappy soaps but trust me our media still avoided to adopt it because after an initial experiment two or so years back our media got a clear signal that our public dont approve of it and not interested so our dramas are still informative more near to reality of normal life and objective.

They do but then so do a lot of things.

Newspapers influence people's mind.

News channels influence people's mind.

There are many things that influence people's mind in this world but doesn't mean that we should run after everyone with a stick in our hand. Moral policing is a very dangerous game. There's no telling where freedom of speech ends and insanity begins.

Well that's for the TV serial makers to decide how they wish to make their TV serial. We are responsible only for the Indian puliblic and as far as Indian public is concerned, we trust them enough to judge for themselves as to what to watch and what not to watch. They have the remote in their hand. We are nobody to doubt their intelligence.

dramas of every country depict the social issues of the respective country and here you Indians are hiding behind bringing in other countries for justifying your media's ostrich like attitude towards your own issues
