People in Turkey are among the hardest workers in the world.

Data by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found that on average, Turkish employees worked an average of 47.9 hours a week in 2016.

Next up was Colombia, and Mexico followed on swift wings with employees averaging 45.2 hours a week and Costa Rica 44.9 hours.

Conversely, of the countries sampled, the Netherlands and Danes work the least, clocking in just 29.1 and 32.1 hours per week respectively. Here are the top 15, based on average hours works a week on the main job:

1. Turkey, 47.9 hours a week
2. Colombia, 47.9
3. Mexico, 45.2
4. Costa Rica, 44.9
5. Chile, 43.4
6. South Africa, 43.1
7. Israel, 40.6
8. Poland, 39.9
9. Hungary, 39.6
10. Portugal, 39.4
11. Czech Republic, 39.4
12. Slovak Republic, 39.2
13. Slovenia, 39.2
14. Greece, 39.0
15. Latvia, 38.9

The data also found that some employees can work more than 60 hours. Over 20 per cent of employees in Turkey work more than 60 hour weeks, and nearly 12 per cent of South Africans do the same – despite the fact that the country’s labour law prohibits more than 45 hours per week.

With that in mind, here are the top 15 countries where the share of employed people worked more than 60 hours per week:

1. Turkey (20.9 per cent of the workforce)
2. Colombia (17.2 per cent)
3. Costa Rica (16.7 per cent)
4. Mexico (14.7 per cent)
5. Indonesia (14.3 per cent)
6. India 13.6 per cent)
7. South Korea (12.8 per cent)
8. South Africa (11.8 per cent)
9. Greece (11.7 per cent)
10. Japan (8.2 per cent)
11. Argentina (8.1 per cent)
12. Chile (8.1 per cent)
13. Iceland (7 per cent)
14. New Zealand (6.7 per cent)
15. Australia (6.1 per cent)

Actually this is not a good thing it means there are less worker rights

If they had to work 40 hours a week by law it would force more to create more jobs

What are you talking about? Is being hardworking a weakness or a strength? Worker rights do not mean you work less, it just means you are compensated well and no one abuses your strengths.

If you don't like it, I would want to swap this culture with Pakistan's and we will be very happy to have "less working rights" if it would mean prosperity of a developed Nation, growth, strength and a shining future.

I have been to Turkey a few times and I have seen Turkish people working for long hours. It is even more apparent in the Turkish diaspora in various European countries. In Sweden, the normal market closing time is 6 pm in winters and 7pm in the summers while a few chains are open till 10 pm (4-5) and even lesser number (1-2) are open beyond 10pm but some of the restaurants mostly owned by Turkish people are open till 11pm or even beyond which is crazy to imagine but it comes really handy in case of emergency..

On the annual average, we are almost equal to South Korea.

Because a large number of religious and national holidays are planned as vacation to stimulate domestic tourism. For example, if the Feast of Sacrifice comes to the first 3-4 days of the week, public holiday decision can be made as 8-9 days.

But under normal conditions, we sleep less and work hard. :)

Don't agree on that.
Hard work is not always the same as smart work.
A mason can work day and night for a week and finish a house but that house is more likely to fall in the next rain or storm compared to an exactly similar house that was built in 3 weeks with breaks in between.

A person can sit and work 12 hours a day but is he really doing better or more with half the motivation and half energy and focus? Compared to a worker who is very motivated and able to do the same in just three days while working 8 hours a day?

It's not really about how long you sit on your desk, but what percentage of time you actually use towards your work. And that equation is not always controlled by the worker but his focus, energy levels, motivation, and ability. Most of which come from getting good rest and good family time.

War Thunder,

I used to think the same that smart working is a substitute for the hard-working. Reality is that smart working is a need regardless of how light or hard-working you are.

What I advocate is hard working despite being smart. Sharpen your sword, know what you are doing, use your mind, use your knowledge and do all of it a lot, instead of doing a little bit of it.

Most millionaires and startup owners work 60 hours a week, that makes 12 hours each day for 5 days. World's largest supermarket Amazon has 80-hour workweek convention and if you put more than 80 hours, you are suggested to be promoted within the company. Here we are speaking of best of the brains who are putting most physical effort and undoubtedly they are one of the most financially rewarded and influential company on the planet.

Smart work is not a substitute for hard work. You have to be smart and have to work hard. We need both to be a legend.

But supporting your point, a bad example is when someone uses his body without using his mind. For example, a worker at a brick factory spends 12 hours working yet makes minimum wages and in comparison, we say work smartly for 8 hours and you will be better off than 12 hours of a mindless labor. But if you are working smartly, giving yourself time to relax, thinking, fine-tuning, sharpening your ax and using most of your ax for the longest hours, you are unbeatable.

My dad cooks Turkish delights even a lot of times he comes late. My grandmother worked until 3am making baklava for Eid orders she is a Turk from Bulgaria they never had stuff given to them they always had to work hard for it my grandmother just loved working a lot but nowadays she is retired and her hobby is just sewing clothes.

Balkan Turks worked very hard for Turkey to be developed a lot of Turkish refugees from the Balkans and Caucasus all worked hard for the development of Turkey.

What motivates the Turks to work hard is that motivation of earning a honest living and earning that money through halal means.

People nowadays look down on a person running a kebab shop but for a Turkish man running its the best ways of earning a honest living. By the way running a local takeaway shop is much better than corporate bastards like Mcdonalds, kfc and burger king.

My wife's maternal grandmother is Turkish, a 70+ years old lady and she lives in Izmir. She still does all chores herself. My wife fetched her to live with us here in Sweden for three months. Everyday, she wakes up around 04:00 - 04:30 AM, wakes us up as well for the prayer.. My habit is to sleep again after prayer if my wife does not want me to help her. One day the grandmother brought coffee to my bed at ~6:00 am and I felts really embarrassed and I told my wife that she's our guest and our elder so we should serve her and not the other way round but according to my wife...she loves working.. I see her taking care of our indoor plants.. and both of them have made many interior decorations like painting the pots of the plants to match the interior etc.. She does not even use elevator which I installed for the elder visitors to our home.

Hard working is good if only you earn equally. Monthly legal minimum salary unfortunately lower than the most European countries. You see, I critise the govt.

P.S.: I am really impressed to see in the list that Arabs are really hardworking people.

Jk...

Long hours might also indicate lower technological deployment in the business or/and govt ecosystem. Honestly, i feel US workers are able to work 40hrs and still make good money because of technology and strong currency. what else? i see everyday with my eyes that US workers make good $ per hr in my office but they are not even always working, sometimes alot of chatting. but they still make good $. why? imo, its technology...it can act as a force multiplier, so policies in place + technology affect productivity alot. still good to work hard and long, if thats whats needed...Turkey is also getting wealthier by working harder..not a bad thing at all. Smart work is also good...saves u needless hardwork. Life is a long race..your body needs to last..lol. Japanese i heard work long hrs on average..
