Turkish Naval Programs

Well it is better than buying everything from foreign countries :)

It is better indeed If you are able to develop everything with your own engineering capabilities. Turkey is also trying to improve industrial skills with paying increadible R&D money for programs but Believe me,

Instead of calling a 1800dwt corvette like Destroyer, I prefer ordering a foreign Destroyer to learn the meaning of it...

Instead of claiming that Iran will develop a 5th generation stealth fighter even much more capable than F-22, I would prefer ordering a foreign 5th generation fighter to see the shape and characteristics of it first.

Propagandas never lead you anywhere If you have an enemy like USA. Everybody is trying to develop something including Pakistan, Iran and Turkey. I never underestimate any of Iranian engineers and congrat all of them and May Allah help them to develop technology but Your Mollah politicians love claiming lie things unfortunately. You are also becoming an instruments of them in forums...

Turkey revives $3 billion Navy projectFont

ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
Turkey has recently revived an ambitious program to build six anti-air warfare frigates to bolster its Navy's defense capabilities, a project which it had to shelve nine years ago because of a severe economic crisis.

The Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, Turkey's defense procurement agency, in early March collected information from several foreign and domestic companies seeking to take part in the program, dubbed "TF-2000," which is expected to cost around $3 billion in today's prices.

The program is expected to be completed in 10-12 years and provide the Navy with its next generation frigates.

Turkey had originally designed the program in the late 1990s, but the 2001 financial crisis then prompted Ankara to shelve it indefinitely.

In 2006, Turkey's top procurement body, the Defense Industry Executive Committee, decided to revive the project and called for the manufacture of six TF-2000 frigates, instead of an earlier-planned eight.

Turkey's Golcuk military shipyard in the country's northwest is planned to build the six vessels. They will be equipped with state-of-the-art anti-missile and anti-aircraft air defense missile systems as well as other weapons.

In line with the high degree of technology transfer required, heavy foreign involvement is expected in the program.

Tough competition expected

Several international ship builders, including Germany's Blohm + Voss, Norway's Kongsberg, and U.S. weapons maker and systems integrator Lockheed Martin are interested in this program, defense analysts said.

The TF-2000 frigate is expected to have a weight of more than 6,000 tons, and the first ship is planned to enter service in 2018, another defense analyst said.

Naval warfare helicopters and pilot-less aircraft also are planned to take off from the TF-2000s.

Among traditional surface warships, frigates are larger than corvettes but smaller than cruisers and destroyers. Turkey’s lack of ocean coastline has led the country to base its surface warship fleet on frigates, which have higher maneuverability than destroyers.

The Turkish Navy's present inventory consists of 19 frigates, including U.S. Perry and Knox-class as well as German Meko-class warships. Some of the older Knox-class frigates will be retired soon.

Turkey has focused on Navy programs in recent years and is expected to spend slightly more than $4 billion for defense procurement in 2010.

Other top Navy projects include a joint program with Germany for six modern submarines with mostly local development and production of up to 12 corvettes. The first ship in the Milgem-type corvette program, the TCG Heybeliada, was put to sea in late 2008 and is planned to be commissioned in 2011.

Hi,
I think it is a pre-requisite for Turkey to have a strong Navy, Turkey has a lot to protect in its waters as compared to Pakistan or Iran, for heavens sake guys, please don't compare turkey's navy with that of Pakistan.the length of the Arabian sea coast line in Pakistan is only 1,046 km. where as Turkey is surrounded by sea on three sides, by the Black Sea in the north, the Mediterranean in the south and the Aegean Sea in the west. In the northwest there is also an important internal sea, the Sea of Marmara, between the straits of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus.
The length of the Black Sea coastline in Turkey is 1,595 kilometres, The Mediterranean coastline runs for 1,577 kilometres and the length of the Aegean Sea coast is over 2,800 kilometres .....surprising right:woot:

Oh yes and i almost forgot Turkey has 500 :woot: islands and islets

I am surprised that they don't have an AC yet :undecided:,Turky having a strong navy is not a coincidence rather their requirement, Pakistan's requirement is strong Army so it enjoys numerical superiority over any other Muslim state:azn:
FYI my intention is just to highlight certain facts for this ambitious modernization of Turkish navy not for the sake of criticism
I wish Turkey prosperity & success

Looks like the radar is still missing, next step is probably installation of the radar and in May start of the harbour tests.

After the harbour tests installation of the weapons: gun, RAM, torpedo's etc. will begin and than the sea trials. Next year summer she'll probably be commisioned.

According to german Navy journal Marineforum the TF-2000 Programm will start soon in next Time. The SSM has opened a Request for Inormation for Naval Guns, Air Defence Missiles, Anti-Ship Missile and Land Attack Missiles from international Biders. The TF-2000 Destroyer should look similar like norwegian NANSEN-Class.
