A decade ago, it used to be filled with Uyghurs gangs and people avoided them like plagues. Now I actually see them running legitimate businesses and holding reputable jobs. Of course, that's my subjective experience so I can't say it's a fact across China.

Assimilation was precisely why China preserved its civilization through the ages. It's while we have large and centralized dynasties in history rather than squabbling city-states like the Greeks. It is also the reason we can rise time and time again after turmoil, while other ancient civilizations disappear into history. In fact, China grown from a patch of land on the banks of Yellow River into what it is today largely through cultural assimilation.
