ICC rules out window for IPL

The ICC has ruled out creating a separate window in the FTP for lucrative domestic leagues like the IPL, despite increasing calls for the game's governing body to figure out a way to allow players to participate without disrupting their international commitments.
"We don't envisage a separate window for a domestic event like the IPL," Haroon Lorgat, the ICC's CEO, said in New Delhi at the unveiling of the ICC World Twenty20 trophy. "We cannot incorporate all domestic events into the FTP. It is just not possible as there would be implications for all other member boards."
Players from Australia, New Zealand and West Indies had to miss the first few games of the IPL this season as they were busy playing for their countries. Australia and New Zealand were involved in a bilateral series and the players couldn't reach India before April 1. Former Australian wicketkeeper and captain of Deccan Chargers, Adam Gilchrist, was the latest to join the chorus for an IPL window, pointing to the financial rewards for the players.
Commenting on the Twenty20-heavy calendar, Lorgat said he wasn't too concerned about possible player burnout once players assemble in the West Indies for the World Twenty20. The tournament begins on April 30, just five days after the conclusion of the six-week IPL. He pointed to the success of last year's World Twenty20 in England, which followed just after the IPL.
"The World Cup in England last year came immediately after the IPL. But it was extremely successful. We saw a full house at all the venues. I think the IPL is a great forerunner to the World Cup," he said. "Players are in Twenty20 mode and we are hopeful of an equally successful World Cup this time around."
The World Twenty20 is supposed to be held once every two years, but the fact that this edition follows barely a year after the previous one is an anomaly, which the ICC is trying to fix. "The fact that it is the third T20 World Cup in four years is a bit of an anomaly," Lorgat said. "We are trying to rectify the scheduling and set it right."
He also brushed aside concerns that the popularity of Twenty20 will overshadow that for Tests and ODIs. "Its popularity has gone beyond expectations but other formats are also popular. There was a lot of negativity around the other formats, but in the last 12-18 months we have seen some fascinating 50-over games," Lorgat said. "When (India's) Sachin Tendulkar scored 200, most people were of the view that 50-overs cricket would definitely survive."

Two blasts before Bangalore IPL match, 15 injured
BANGALORE: Two low-intensity explosions near a packed Chinnaswamy cricket stadium less than an hour before an IPL match left 15 persons including five security men injured and sent nervous crowds running in panic.
The start of the match between the home team Royal Challengers and Mumbai Indians was delayed by an hour and play commenced in the stadium after the police gave an all clear signal. An estimated 35,000 spectators had come to watch the game.
The explosives placed behind a plastic board near the wall outside the stadium, venue for the tie, went off 45 minutes before the start of the match at 4pm, injuring four police personnel, a private security guard and 10 others, police said. Another small explosion took place near the stadium.
"Two low intensity bombs have exploded. We are investigating ", joint commissioner of police Alok Kumar said.
Three injured policemen were shifted to the ICU of a private hospital. Five persons, whose eardrums were damaged due to the impact of the blast, are undergoing treatment as in-patients, hospital sources said.
Seven others who had suffered bruises were discharged after first aid, sources said.
"It is a minor blast that occurred near the wall adjacent to gate number 12. It appears that some explosive material was hidden behind a plastic board near the wall", Bangalore city police commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters after visiting the spot.
The explosion damaged a two-feet section of the wall. Remnants of the explosive materials were found at the spot, sources said.
In New Delhi, home secretary G K Pillai said low intensity explosive was used in one blast and in the second blast possibly an even smaller quantity was used.
Sources said the CCTV footage of the area where the explosions occurred was being analysed.
Forensic experts rushed to the spot and were analysing materials collected from the blast site.
"There is no cause for panic. The match will go on. We have taken all precautionary measures" Bidari said assuring worried fans.
A conclusion can be arrived at only after receiving the report by investigators, he said.
"Suddenly there was a sound and some pieces of wall flew off. Some were hit on the face," an eyewitness said.
Minutes after the blasts, police cordoned off the entire area and closed down the gates to prevent movement of people as spectators waited to move into the stadium. Thousands of people were entering the stadium when the explosions occurred.
Police also deployed additional forces in the stadium as a precautionary measure and conducted a thorough search around the match venue.
"FSL experts are undertaking analysis of the explosive material and the cause will be known after receiving their report", Bidari said. Sniffer dogs were also pressed into service.
The IT hub, which has been on the terror radar, has witnessed low intensity bomb explosions for the second time since July 2008.
On July 25, 2008, the city was rocked by eight serial blasts, claiming the life of a woman.
The Royal Challengers were initially apprehensive of taking to the field after the blast, sources said.

India opener Virender Sehwag has suffered a shoulder injury, which has ruled him out of the ICC World Twenty20 beginning in the West Indies on April 30. Sehwag has been advised rest for three to four weeks, and has been replaced by Tamil Nadu batsman M Vijay in the 15-man squad, the BCCI said in a statement. Gautam Gambhir will be the vice-captain.
The BCCI statement, however, did not mention how or when Sehwag sustained the injury. Sehwag played all 14 IPL league matches for Delhi Daredevils, scoring 356 runs at an average of 25, his last appearance being on April 18. He was deemed fit when included in the World Twenty20 squad so it's likely the injury occurred during Delhi's IPL campaign.

Sehwag had sustained a shoulder injury during the 2009 IPL in South Africa, shortly before the World Twenty20 was due to begin. He travelled with the squad to England, but was not able to play a game. India were eliminated without winning a game in the second round.
His replacement, Vijay, has been in aggressive form for Chennai Super Kings, scoring 417 runs, including a century, at an average of 38. He has been India's back-up opener for Tests and ODIs as well.
