The Conflict in Syria as it Relates to Turkey | Updates & Discussions

'The ISIL, originally starting off as Al-Qaeda's branch in Iraq, broke off from Al-Qaeda when ISIL commander Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi disobeyed the orders of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahri to pull out of Syria.'

'The ISIL's main base was in the city of Raqqa until they withdrew. Ironically, regime forces never bombed Raqqa when it was in ISIL hands. After other opposition groups took control of the region, regime forces began to pound in area with airstrikes.'

I wonder how this deal between Syria and ISIL work like. Does Assad expect the ISIL to leave Syria after FSA, then other groups like PYD, have been beaten? I hope our govt will deal properly with ISIL, because after stability has been achieved in Syria, im sure Assad will help the pkk and isil to launch attacks into Turkey

A Turkish government minister has called on Europe to do more to stop radicals travelling through his country to join the jihad in Syria.

Hayati Yazici, Minister of Customs and Trade, wants to prevent young Muslims crossing the border to fight against Syrian government forces.

Syria has become a magnet for extremists taking part in jihad – a holy war, according to analysts.

“The Europeans let them [European jihadists] travel from their countries to Turkey and then ask Turkey to prevent them going to Syria,” said Yazici. He asked, “Why do you let them leave? If you know they’re going to Syria then you should prevent them from travelling.”

The minister told euronews that he’d like to see European countries sharing information about the movements and activities of young radicals.

Thousands of young men have left Europe to join Islamist rebels fighting in Syria.

And as the conflict drags on the numbers are growing with some recruits as young as 15 or 16.

Well, this is a idiotic statement from an official;
the destination for those who leave their European countries to enter Syria is Turkey, as they use us as a transit. When arriving at Turkey, they use smuggling routes to enter Syria illegally or simply pass by border-posts as if nothing unusual is going on. Now, by putting the burden on the European countries - what can they really do, stop people who wants to travel to Turkey altogether? That would really benefit our tourism sector, wouldn't it? Instead of throwing out not-very-well-thought-of statements like these, our politicians should focus on gaining full control over our own borders instead of portraying us all as idiots.

Syria uses SAMs to harass Turkish aircraft

1525999_-_main.jpg

Syria's harassment of the Turkish Air Force surged towards the end of April, when its surface-to-air missile systems 'locked on' to F-16s for more than 20 minutes, according to information released by the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF).

The TAF's assertion that Syrian SAMs "achieved radar lock" on its F-16s means the pilots were alerted by their radar warning systems that their aircraft were illuminated by a SAM system's target-engagement radar.

The TAF has been complaining that Syrian SAMs are illuminating its aircraft since November, when it said S-75 (SA-2 'Guideline') and S-200 (SA-5 'Gammon') systems had locked on to F-16s patrolling inside Turkish airspace on three different days.

The total illumination time increased to 120 seconds in December and then 360 seconds in January, according to the TAF, but there were no reported incidents in February.

This changed in March, when Turkish F-16s were illuminated by SAM engagement radars for more than 1,700 seconds. Much of this activity occurred after an F-16 shot down a Syrian MiG-23 that the TAF said had strayed into Turkish airspace.

The Syrians began using their latest air defence systems to harass Turkish F-16s even before that incident. The TAF reported that a Pantsyr-S1E (SA-22 'Greyhound') illuminated one of its aircraft for the first time on 5 March and a Buk-M2E (SA-17 'Grizzly') was used for the first time on 19 March.

Even though they have shorter ranges than Syria's Soviet-era S-75s and S-200s, both these systems would be far more intimidating for Turkish pilots as they are significantly more sophisticated. Unlike the old semi-active radar-guided SAMs, the Buk-M2E does not need to keep a target continuously illuminated until it is hit by a missile so can simultaneously engage more than one target.

At the same time, by using its Buk-M2Es and Pantsyr-S1Es Syria could be providing Turkey and its allies with useful intelligence on the radar frequencies used by the systems and their engagement envelopes.

The harassment decreased over the first 20 days of April, when the TAF only reported engagements on two days. However, Syrian SAM systems have illuminated Turkish F-16s on all but one day between 21 April and 30 April, bringing the total illumination time up to 1,205 seconds.

The first Turkish aircraft other than an F-16 - an Airtech CN235 - was illuminated on 23 April. The Turkish Air Force operates CN235s in the transport and surveillance roles, while the coastguard has a maritime surveillance variant.

A rocket fired from Syria hit a building on the Turkish-Syrian border, however, there are no reported injuries.
World Bulletin / News Desk

A rocket projectile fell on the Yayladagi customs gate Tuesday at the Turkish Syrian border in the southern Turkish province of Hatay.

According to the evaluation of security forces the rocket projectile was fired from Syria hitting the vehicle inspection building.

Nobody was reported injured in the incident, but there was material damage on the building and a more thorough investigation is being carried out.

Incidents like this are not unusual in Turkey's provinces along the 800km Syrian border.

Syria is gripped by a deadly civil war, which has claimed more than 100,000 lives according to the last tally by the UN. However, the organization has now stopped updating tally after an official count became too difficult to ascertain.

Turkey denies Reyhanli bombers are still on run
The governorate of Hatay, a southern city in Turkey, rejects claims that the perpetrators of a bomb attack in the city's Reyhanli province on May 11 last year are still missing.

Reyhanli, a province near Turkey’s Syrian border, which has seen thousands of Syrian refugees as they flee civil war in their own country, was attacked last May in a twin-blast which left 52 people dead and 236 wounded.

The governorate in a statement Tuesday said twenty suspects were arrested in connection with the attack and their trials are proceeding forthwith.

"As this plain truth is known to public, the statement that none of the perpetrators were caught does not reflect reality," the governorate said.

A prosecutor in the city of Adana prepared an indictment last October demanding life sentences for the suspects, saying that the deadly attacks were organized by "the Urgent Ones," a splinter group of the Turkish People's Liberation Party/Front and Syrian intelligence.
