Widespread unrest is occurring in Turkey as a result of Istanbul's arrest and imprisonment, Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a well known opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was arrested on March 19, 2025, on suspicion of corruption, which he denies, his detention has caused widespread protests throughout Turkey, with at least eight journalists arrested for covering the protests and over 1,133 protesters detained.

Ekrem Imamoglu's Arrest
Imamoglu, a member of the Republican People's Party CHP, was taken into custody from his home in Istanbul as part of an investigation into alleged corruption, extortion, bribery and money laundering, the charges also included supporting the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a claim he strongly contests, his arrest is widely perceived as a strategic move to eliminate him as a potential challenger to Erdogan in the 2028 presidential elections.
