Super Su-30MKI: From Air Dominance To Air Supremacy

The AMLCD configuration is derived from what was originally designed for the Su-35. It will apply to the Super Su-30MKI as well. As for new-generation air-to-ground PGMs as and when they become available from Russia or elsewhere, depending on the operational reqmts, they will be easily integrated with the Super Su-30MKI's navigation-and-attack system due to its open-architecture design. The Su-30MKI can presently accommodate only one BrahMos in its underbelly without any structural modifications to the airframe. But since the IAF has specified that it wants two underwing-mounted BrahMos missiles to be carried by a Su-30MKI, IAF-specific structural modifications to the Su-30MKI airframe are required.
Also to be noted is that the IAF has gone for the distributed AESA-array configuration (for the mini-AEW & C role) primarily as a back-up capability just in case the DRDO/CABS is unable to deliver the indigenous AEW & CS on time. In addition, have an embedded mini-AEW & C capability within a strike package oriented towards offensive air campaigns has some unique advantages aimed at neutralising the force-multiplier capabilities offered by hostile AEW & C platforms. This is an entirely standalone issue that I will dwell upon in future.-Prasun K. Sengupta

AESA is cofirmed. But there is a huge fight goin b/w Irkut and HAL on Brahmos configuration.. Sukhoi is asking for too much of money where DRDO/HAL scientists are confident that they can do the job with half of what sukhoi is asking for.. Another glitch is that Sukhoi is not allowing HAL to make the modifications.

The RVV-SD has a maximum range of 110km and engage targets flying at an altitude of 25km

The long Range BVR Missile :

The missile uses a multi-function doppler-monopulse active radar seeker developed by OAO Agat. The radar features two modes of operation, over short distances, the missile will launch in an active "fire and forget" mode. Over longer distances the missile is controlled by an inertial auto pilot with occasional encoded data link updates from the launch aircraft's radar on changes in spatial position or G of the target. As the missile comes within 20 km (12.42 mi) of its target, the missile switches to its active radar mode. The host radar system maintains computed target information in case the target breaks the missile's lock-on.

If the seeker is jammed, it switches automatically to a passive mode and homes on the source of jamming. Fired against high-altitude non-maneuvering targets approaching head-on, the R-77RVV-AE has a range of 100 km (62 mi), with the seeker locking on at around 15 km (9.3 mi), and a maximum speed of Mach 4 (3,045 mph (4,900 km/h)). At short range, it can engage targets maneuvering at up to 12g. The basic version of this missile is said to have a maximum range of 90 km (55 mi). The missile can also be used from internal carriages where the control fins and surfaces will fold flat until it is catapulted clear of the aircraft for motor ignition. Future plans call for increasing the missile range well beyond 150 kilometres (93 mi)

Does anyone know if ALL SU-30MKIs in IAF service will be UPG to "Super" standard or just this 42? And if so what's the timeline?

First these 40 mki's are upgraded with brahmos....
Later production variants will be of super standard and after all 270 production is over 1st acquired planes will be upgraded and so on...

. . .
hope Russia adds RAM to the airframe to reduce the MKI's hideous RCS thats the only Con the MKI has

first of all the 42 MKIs would be upgraded to the Super-30 standard followed by the remaining jets which were inducted first(2000).After the entire upgrade for the 120 odd jets will be finished, the remaining new MKIs which would be produced by HAL will be of the Super-30 standard.

First lot of upgraded Sukhoi-30MKI, called 'Super Sukhois', to enter IAF in 2014.

Moscow, August 17: The Indian Sukhoi 30MKI fighter aircraft will be upgraded with certain fifth generation aircraft characteristics to convert it into a “Super Sukhoi”, Alexy Fedorov, President and Chairman of the Board of Irkut Corporation of Russia announced during the MAKS 2011 show here.

India has five squadrons of Sukhoi 30MKIs numbering around 100 aircraft which are to be upgraded into the “Super Sukhoi” format. The upgrade will apply not only to the aircraft in service with the Indian Air Force (IAF) but also to those yet to be delivered to India and to be licence-manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Fedorov said.

The upgrade will include a new cockpit, an upgraded radar and certain stealth characteristics to make it less visible to enemy radar than the present Sukhoi 30. Most significantly, the aircraft will be able to carry a heavier weapons load including the airborne version of the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile, he added.

Fedorov said the Super Sukhoi will be a potent aircraft similar in features to a fifth generation aircraft, however, he refused to provide s specific details of the upgrade stating that the exact nature of the upgrade was still to be decided between the Indian and Russian sides. Discussions are currently on regarding various aspects of the proposed upgrade, he said.

The Irkut chief did not provide any indication of the price of the upgrade project. However, going by the general cost trends of similar upgrades, the price could run close to a billion dollars. The Super Sukhoi would be a potent weapons platform offering both ground attack of precision targets and air superiority roles.

why only close to a billion dollar when we are upgrading our old junks for billions of dollars.

So ALL (~300 eventually) SU-30MKI in IAF service will be UPG to "SUPER" standard (a suspicion I've had for a while but now confirmed). So this means all MKIs will be able to carry the Brahmos right if this is a part of the UPG or is the Air-launched Brahomos capability just an "add-on" to the "SUPER" UPG on some of the MKIs in IAF? This UPG includes AESA right? But what about engines? And HMDS?
