What's new

Sukhoi has crashed

Few comments from LiveFist.......... some of them seem to be from the fraternity,

spook 9:00 PM
note the deployed tail chute and full flaps extended. TVC also seems to have been engaged. My first guess was going to be bird strike but lack of apparent external engine damage and the previously reported single engine landings carried out due to engine failures doesn't fit the bill.

my guess is an accelerated stall similar to the infamous Paris crash but one where the pilot didn't pull up too far. we have to accept that pilot error does occur and i am glad that both of them managed to walk away, learn and live to fight another day.

On a lighter note, maybe this flanker can be spruced up and can join the fulcrum as a gate guardian.

apparent chain of events appears like this-

the vectors were deployed, engines flamed out due to starvation-- some low speed maneuver (the flaps)

thankfully the aircraft was brought in level flight in time

like spook and ram said shit happens be it pilot error or mechanical failure (or else you have to operate sukhois like the american f22s, away from the public and the world in total secrecy, god know what all mishaps might have happened with that toy).

I was just wondering why cant all these be performed over unpopulated areas. forests deserts seas....

new pilots are spending almost 1:6 time in the sim these days with the mirage 2000s... while its just 50- 50 time in the sim with the sukhoi. the top management who no longer fly but are busy with admin duties think two pilots in a plane make it crash free. that was the point of having a two seater sukhoi flanker, endurance and crew workload distribution is unviable.

they dont understand that these are split second decisions once botched up and even if you have 4 pilots in the cockpit nothing can be done. Most of the sorties are less than 2 hours... having two pilots in a fly by wire modern cockpit to reduce stress is point less.

also having such a large aircraft in large numbers ( hell! ~250 in order) for a country like india with miniscule defense budget for iaf's aircraft aspirations is idiotic.

idia doesnt need a aircraft to do 6+ hour endurance sortie.... we are not going to drop a bomb in africa, europe or americas or australia.... we have airbases across india...

we needed some 125 new mig 29s (like aircrafts) in air superiority role.. 75 random aircraft with ground attack capability... and maybe a 40 sukhois (10- 2-seaters for training and long missions).... what is important was high availability and fitness of armament and aircraft... ability to maintain and modify without OEM support

multirole fighter aircraft is a myth... no doubt MMRCA is going no where

americans offered F18... which it has started to replace for themselves.... the F-16s which they are already replacing. Mig 35 (its a high altitude aircraft ) which wasnt truly multirole. Gripen is note medium weight it is feather class!! Eurofighter is a aircraft whcih was in the sukhoi category.... and seroisly it didnt meet indias needs... they thought once india places the order they will start development... and they had a half hearted effort

And india can make n number of tejas like aircraft at the cost of 1 Rafael!! so india must start making aircrafts rapidly... maybe even copy paste like chinese.... and not afraid of failure like the skunkworks.... you can send unmanned space crafts to mars and moon ... but cant make a fighter jet? a jet engine? hell even a mig 21 clone would done...

Another observation, the mki that has crashes seemed to be one othose performing in various airshows. Is it possible that aircraft was performing a cobra with tvc, but both engines flamed out during the manuver. Might happen as the aircraft was inducted way back in 2002, & taking into account recent engine failures, i bet my two cents on above scenario.

The Sukhoi fleet is big and only getting bigger. Accidents will happen. Learning from these accidents, making improvements in training, and upgrading the fleet is essential.

even i am going through it, and i believe that now the blame is going to IAF. Even if the technical failure is there, which means bad maintenance.

It appears the Su #0s have replaced the Mig 21s in the IAF as the flying coffins, at least this one ejects the pilots safely..

actually it is 12 years. Introduction year is 2002
Sukhois were inducted as Su30Ks in 97 who were later upgraded to MKI standard in early 2000s so yes they are in service for 18 years now.

tum log kabhi zindgi main ye desh bhagti thori der side per rakhty ho ?

September 27,2002 first SU-30 was inducted
Bhai Jaan our sukhois were inducted in 97 and same were upgraded to MKI standard in early 2000(The date you are giving here).

I am beginning to wonder if Indian pilots ever try to save their jets,or they are simply told to eject at the 1st sign of trouble?

Mig21 - eight crashes in last two years
Sukhoi 30 mki- 5 crashes in twelve years

Speaks a volume dont you think

18 years to be exact.

m being modest. :p

Yeah, right. Our pilots eject for fun.

On a serious note: Our pilots never ejects till the last moment after trying everything possible to salvage the aircraft. Thats why death tole of pilots are much higher in IAF than its western counterparts.
