In the UK the state provides free education from 4-19. Some non-academic programmes are free in the UK upto 20-something, and you can do certain subjects free of cost even as an adult.

University education is no longer free. Universities can charge fees upto £9000 a year for domestic students and more than double that for foreign students. UK students can get loans for their first degree course, which are repaid through their salary only once they start earning beyond a certain threshold (£18,000 i think). The loan repayment will also vary based on how much you earn.

Private fee paying schools exist, but only about 7% of the population sends their kids to these schools. Funnily enough - pupils who attend these schools form a huge percentage of the elite in this country.

The research found that three-quarters (74%) of the UK's top judges went to a fee-paying school, and nearly eight in 10 (78%) went on to Oxford or Cambridge University.

Among top military personnel, some seven in 10 (71%) were educated in the private sector, although just 14% were Oxbridge educated.

Slightly more than half of leading print journalists and solicitors (51% each) attended fee-paying schools.

Just over half (54%) of these journalists attended Oxford or Cambridge, along with 55% of solicitors and 51% of the senior civil servants included in the study.

In politics, half the Cabinet were privately educated (including old Etonian Prime Minister David Cameron) compared with 13% of the shadow cabinet, and around a third (32%) of MPs.

The current Cabinet does have fewer former independent school pupils than the coalition cabinet of 2010, the report notes, but slightly more than Tony Blair's post-election Cabinet in 2005.

Just under half (47%) of the current cabinet are Oxbridge graduates, along with 32% of the shadow cabinet.

The trust said that of the country's top doctors, 61% were educated at independent schools, nearly one-quarter at grammar schools (22%) and the remainder (16%) at comprehensives.

4-19 years of age right? Yeah that makes sense I completed by sophomore before 16 and senior before 18. I also studied in a private school / academy so I had to pay fee but I got scholarships so most of the cost compensated. Reason was my parents wanted me to be safe from bullying & racism.

When you are asking 1 to pay based on their passport - What is that called? [I am not attacking you but discussing]
When you asked someone to pay 3-4x more just because they either dont belong to your country or havent been there long enough [what is that called?]

I think not too long ago there was also an article about how "elite schools and university" had a higher white population and that they should do something about it!

UK Schools till end of A levels are free , for every single person , national or non national, and have good quality infrastructure and education,

I am not sure how true this is I went for uni so I dont really know abt the pri and secondary education...I guess I have to take your word for it!

And then a guy in the comment above is saying that pakistan should be renamed as "communist republic", one should ask him which communist republic ever had these kinds of private mafias in dozens of fields of the national economy.

Is there a concept of open schooling in pakistan ? the reason i ask is getting a higher level education is the minimum one can do...even though due to various reason's i failed even in that but thinking of restarting my education with National open schooling which is on par with CBSE board...if something like this is made available in your country the fleecing of parents can be circumvented...the only catch is in NIOS like system of india...either the parents must be little educated to guide the student here and there or the kid has to have access to google mama.

Sadly SOME of the uni dont even keep up their standards....MANY do...but many also dont! That is why they have all these servey / rankings because that is how you attract customers/ students!
It was in early to mid 2000s they started charging...But some courses were charging slightly earlier!

Not only that you also have "consultants" whose job is to wrangle gullible kids to such universities. They charge a nominal fee because they get paid by the university for bringing in "diversity".

This consultant business is only in South Asia...I did my admission on my own....The study in UK fair consultant shouldnt charge you a penny coz the uni pays them! But the bloody education consultants [not the UK representatives] in Pakistan charge fees! Hence education IS a money making scheme in Pakistan!

But the bloody education consultants [not the UK representatives] in Pakistan charge fees! Hence education IS a money making scheme in Pakistan!

I will say this City School has been trying to get listed as well offload some of its shares through offer for sales. GEMS was interested in taking up the offer. The idea was/is to get some moolah abroad. Beaconhouse did try this some years back but got no traction.

It's true I study here right now in the final year of A levels , however for uni foreigners pay 3-6 times more dependent on uni

One thing to note though, local student classification is applicable to local tax payers and residents and nothing to do with holding British passport

Despite being a British Citizen, I paid international student fees for the masters because my parents are not UK taxpayers and I was not resident either.

I think the rule is 3 years tax filing/residency or if the child has been in school here for 3 years to qualify for local student fees (irrespective of passport).
