Where there is the force, there shall be the dark side and the light side. Now, I'm not too knowledgeable about the SW:EU, but I'm pretty sure that he's dead. Anyone with a dark heart can become a Sith; but I'm doubting the claims that Luke has fallen. It would be too idiotic, and certainly an odd way to welcome him back to the big screen after over 30 years!

And the balance to the force thing is an ancient Sith prophecy of the Sithari - one who will elevate the Sith to their zenith and also destroy them.

The corresponding Jedi notion is that of the choosen One whod restore balance to the force by destroying the Sith because the Jedi believed the Light to be the real state if the force and that the dark is its perversion.

Apparently that prophecy has been claimed to be fulfilled by numerous people from Darth Bane after the Battle of Ruussan when he destroyed the Siths and constituted the rule of 2 - one master and one apprentice at one time.

To Anakin Skywalker who was instrumental in raising the Sith to their height of power while u
timately destroying them.

Other claimants range from Palpatine to Exar Kun on one hand to Ulic Qel Droma and Darth Revan one the other.

Stars Wars is a set of movies primarily (plus a range of other media - cartoons, comics and so forth which make up the 'expanded universe'). The movies are, in order of release, SW ep 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3.
You should definitely give it a go; I'm sure you'll love it.

Hmmmn; maybe they've based it around the Dark Empire Series wherein Luke falls to the Dark Side and serves the reborn Emperor Palpatine before being eventually saved by Leia.

No they're not. JJ Abrams and the team said it themselves that its going to be an original story.
That Dark Empire series is now no different than fan-fics. All of those books,games comics and most of all KOTOR is now on the level of fan-fiction, published fan-fiction that is.
