Battle of Saragarhi. 10,000 Pathans vs. 21 Sikh Soldiers of British Indian Army

Punjab government Wednesday announced that battle story of Saragarhi would be included in the school curriculum in the state as a tribute to those martyrs who fought a spirited battle against 'Pashtuns'.

Paying tributes to the martyrs on 'Saragarhi day' function organised at Gurudwara, Chandimandir, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said the contingent of 36th Sikhs (now 4th Sikh Regiment) led by Hawaldar Ishar Singh chose to fight rather than leave their post.

"We are all proud of that rare achievement of Sikh soldiers, who were awarded the Indian Order of Merit posthumously, the highest gallantry award of that time," he said, according to an official release here.

The 21 martyrs of 36th Sikh Regiment of British Indian Army laid down their lives after killing hundreds of 'Pashtuns' while fighting a spirited battle against a force of more than 10,000 attackers in 1897.

Badal said, the significance of that battle could be seen from the fact that Saragarhi was one of the eight collective stories of bravery published by UNESCO for children.

"It is our bounden duty to include such events of history in our textbooks so that our younger generations can draw inspiration from such events and the spirit of bravery and patriotism can be instilled in their minds," Badal said.

He said Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt had told him he was exploring the possibility of making a film on the historic Saragarhi battle and expressed hope that it would soon materialise.

The state government would provide every possible help for this cause, he said.

Why dont our history books teach us such incidents of valour shown by our people instead of glorifying all those barbaric islamic ruler and family history of major congress politocian and how great their current/future generation is

Are you guys happy that the Sikh Regiment fought bravely against Pashtuns, them being Muslims or are you happy that they fought bravely.

Present day Indian army as well as Pakistani army is but a continuation of British Indian army.

So yes we are are proud that British Indian army fought valiantly against Pashtun tribsemen, Just like how, we are proud of Indian army fighting against axis powers of world war 2.

So question is, arn't you proud that Sikh regiment of British Indian army, which logically is an ancestors to the presents day Pakistani army too, fought so valiantly against pashtun tribesmen..simply because it was sikhs who were fighting against Muslims?

You must be kidding me! How paranoid can someone get? :undecided:

Dude! 21 brave guys defended against 10k enemies, and died only after killing hundreds of enemies! Who else will not be amazed at this?!

It matters little who the enemy was, what one feels proud about is the bravery of the soldiers and their stand against such odds.

Even today the 4th Battalion ( then the 36th Sikhs) The Sikh regiment is called the Saragarhi Batallion for their bravery.

There is no shame in honouring a brave enemy, for it takes a honourable man to recognize a brave man

Very true
Something on the lines of this.

IF not for Us this brave man would have been forgotten unknown and unrecognized.

A brave 'enemy'?

My comments were in answer to ppl making point of whether its British army personnel or Muslims or Sikhs or whatever. I am just saying that it doesn’t matter who they were. And even if they were your enemy, you should honour their courage.
