Bangladesh has welcomed the Sahara group's proposal to set up a satellite township in the country to ease population pressure on Dhaka. Sheltech, a leading developer in Bangladesh, acknowledged Sahara's proposal and added that this initiative would help to generate employment as well as promote economic development. He added that decentralization of activities is essential and that the people in Dhaka face a lot of problems due to lack of facilities and the pressure of the rising population.

Dhaka, May 21 (bdnews24.com) – Chairman of Sahara India Pariwar Subrata Roy Sahara will fly down in Dhaka on Tuesday where he is expected to finalise investment of 80,000 crore rupees in five separate township schemes near the capital.

Its local public relations agent said founder Sahara will discuss potential investment opportunities with government officials, business and political leaders in his first-ever trip to Bangladesh.

The Indian business conglomerate apparently has made up its mind to hugely invest in Bangladesh.

There is high expectation that its multi-million dollar schemes in low-cost township, health and hospitality sectors would move the nation's competitiveness to a new height.

Insiders earlier said Chairman Sahara, with his roots in Bikrampur near the capital, Dhaka, will visit Bangladesh with a formal outline of his investment plan.

The group has reportedly finalised an initial plan of investing 80,000 crore rupees in five separate township schemes near Dhaka.

Several meetings have already been held between the group's representatives and Bangladeshi officials. But a concrete shape is expected during the visit of the high-level delegation led by the Chairman.

The group has already shown its interest in pouring money in modern but low-cost township schemes during meetings with the Board of Investment, said a local contact who preferred not to be named pending the group chairman's official announcement sometime soon.

The group's representatives held several meetings with BoI, the latest on Mar 11 when they discussed mainly how the investment could be made and under which law and regulations, he said.

Earlier, the Times of India had quoted Sahara as saying that they 'are going into Bangladesh in a big way".

"I have finalised work of Rs 80,000 crore," the Times of India quoted him as saying.

"It is a country where we have lots to do. I have sent the proposal to the Bangladesh PM for the New Dhaka project and hope to meet her," he had reportedly said.

The group said they just want "a sovereign guarantee" to pursue the Bangladesh plan.

He said the group has already selected 40 square kilometers of land, about 50 kilometres from Dhaka, to begin with.

Sahara group has businesses in hospitality, real estate, financial services, mutual funds, life insurance, media, film production, sports, information technology, healthcare, commodity sales and services and consumer products.

The conglomerate , which owns Indian Premier League franchise Pune Warriors India and is known its passion for backing Indian cricket and acquisition of an iconic hotel in London, is attempting to expand its focus in sectors such as education, retail, mining, oil exploration and banking.

Founded in 1978, Sahara India Pariwar now has 4,163 establishments across India serving over 7.10 crore customers with over 1 million workers.

It bought the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in December 2010 for $726 million. In 2004, the group was termed by the Time magazine as 'the second largest employer in India' after the Indian Railways.

DHAKA: Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakhya (RAJUK) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Sahara Group to set up a new residential project named ‘New Dhaka’ in the city.

Joint Secretary (Development) of Housing and Public Works Syed Matlubur Rahman and RAJUK Chairman Nurul Huda, on behalf of Bangladesh and Managing Worker and Chairman of Sahara India Pariwar Saharasri Subrata Roy Sahara, on behalf of his group signed the MoU.

State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan was present during the signing of MoU.

The signed MoU does not have any legal binding but rather it captures the intent of the Bangladesh Government and Sahara India Parivar to work mutually for the development of Bangladesh.

According to the MoU, the Bangladesh government was searching for a company to build some townships around Dhaka and found that Sahara Group was capable of doing the job.

Possibilities of working on the education and health sector were also discussed apart from the real estate sector.

Saharasri Subrata Roy said, “We are very much happy at the possibilities of working in Bangladesh. Apart from the business ventures, we also have social and sentimental interest to venture all possibilities.”

State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan said, “We are looking forward to work and overcome all obstacles with mutual respect and assistance.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Saharasri Subrata Roy Sahara, Managing Worker and Chairman, Sahara India Pariwar arrived in Dhaka on a three-day office visit.

It is a major business conglomerate in India with operations in multiple sectors, including financial services, life insurance, mutual funds, housing finance, print and television news media, entertainment channels, cinema production, healthcare, sports, and information technology.

The group has 4,163 establishments across India serving over 7.10 crore customers with over 1 million workers.

Sahara is based upon the ethos of a family (the reason why the group is called a ‘Pariwar’--family, in Hindi) and was termed by the Time magazine as ‘the second largest employer in India after the Indian Railways’.

New Dhaka is only a name given by the Sahara group. It will neither be a New Dhaka nor it will be a new Capital. Basundhara has been developing all kinds of NEw Dhaka since last 20 years. Only thing this Sahara will do is build high-rise apartments and sell them to the would-be buyers. According to Daily Amar Desh the initial contract that has been signed between SAHARA and National Housing Authority of Bangladesh based on that SAHARA will build 175000 flats and 30000 plots.

But Bangladesh government has expressed interest to build the satellite township based of public private partnership as RAJUK already had a plan to build 4 satellite towns 5366 acre of land with 169216 flats and 17960 plots at a cost of 40635 cr Taka. The locations for the township were Savar satellite city, Bongshy-Dhamrai satellite city, Echamoti-Sirajdikhan green satellite city, Dhalessori-Singair satellite city.

If the project has been moved forward under PPP then size of the project will be much bigger then the planned project of SAHARA under which total number of flat will cross 300 thousand and plot with 50000.

In these satellite cities health, education, entertainment, communication and all other facilities of the citizen will be ensured. For plot and flat 40% area will be allocated and 60% for building infrastructure.

But SAHARA has not indicated whether they will move ahead by accepting the PPP proposal.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) yesterday asked the authorities to immediately publish details of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Wednesday between India's Sahara group and Rajuk for investment in low-cost township schemes in Bangladesh.

“For the sake of establishing good governance, accountability and ensuring people's right to information, the contents of the MoU should be published,” Dr Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of TIB, said in a statement.

While praising Rajuk's initiative to provide housing for low-income families, Iftekharuzzaman demanded transparency in every phase of the project.

"TIB opines that it would not be wise to take any decision on a valuable sector like land without conducting a long-term cost-benefit analysis and risk assessment,” he added.

DHAKA, May 24 (BSS) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said that the country's economy is doing well despite the global economic meltdown as Subrata Roy Sahara, Chairman of Sahara India Pariwar, the largest private sector employer in India, called on her.

"We've maintained a good trend of food and industrial production that helped the country to attain over 6 per cent GDP growth rate over the last couple of years despite global economic recession," she said.

Swapna Roy, wife of Subrata Roy, accompanied him during the meeting held at PM's official Ganobhaban residence this evening.

After the meeting, Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Bijan Lal Deb briefed reporters.

Sheikh Hasina said that Bangladesh has progressed a lot in the IT sector as Bangalees are technology-friendly with an increasing trend of using internet and mobile phones.

"There are some 30 million internet users as well as some 4,576 union information and service centers across the country," she said. It has created a huge number of employments side by side with providing services, she added.

Subrata highly praised Bangladesh's present economic situation as he mentioned the stable credit rating for Bangladesh by the S&P and Moody. "Bangladesh's economy is moving well despite the global economic recession,"

He said there is a huge potentiality for promoting tourism and constructing satellite towns in Bangladesh, especially outside the capital.

Subrata also paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Awami League presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Abdus Sobhan Golap were present, among others, on the occasion.

DHAKA: Chairman of Sahara India Pariwar, a giant business conglomerate of India, Saharasri Subrata Roy Sahara sought cooperation from Bangladeshi giant conglomerate company Bashundhara Group (BG) in its initiation of investment in housing sector of Bangladesh.

He said, “Sahara Group wants to work in cooperation with Bangladeshi developers, not in competition.”

Subrata Roy came up with the statement when he met Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan in city’s Ruposhi Bangla Hotel on Friday.

On the other hand, BG Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan said, “Sahara Group could come up with a big investment in Bangladesh if entrepreneurs of both government and nongovernment sectors cooperate them.”

It will meet almost every housing demand of the people in the country as a renowned developer company is investing in this sector, he added.

At the time, Sahara Group chairman listened to the experience that Bashundhara Group gathered in different housing projects.

BG chairman promised Subrata Roy of all kind of cooperation and thanked him for visiting Bangladesh.

When Sahara India chairman commented that land price is high in Bangladesh, he said, “Price of land in some specific areas are high, but in most other areas of the country is comparatively low.

Among others, strategic management group chief of Sahara Subrata Bhattacharya, chief of corporate communication department Rajib Chakrabarti, executive director of Bashundhara Group Colonel (retd) Khandaker Abdul Waheed and some other high-up officials of both groups were present in the meeting.

DHAKA: Sahara India Pariwar started it’s journey in Bangladesh on Friday through launching Sahara Matribhumi Development Corporation.

Sheikh Fazle Hossain Fahim was made the director of the company.

Company Chairman Subrata Roy Sahara came up with the disclosure at a press conference at Ruposhi Bangla hotel at about 11 am.

The company will invest $130 million initially in different sectors including new Dhaka project, Township Business, Infrastructure development, education, health and tourism.

The investment will increase gradually.

Besides, Sahara Matribhumi Pariwar is likely to get sponsorship of Bangladesh National Cricket Team, Subrata Roy Sahara informed the reporters.
