RUSSIAN JETS INTERCEPTED AND LOCKED-MISSILES ON US SPY PLANES
STOCKHOLM,August 4(RT)-US officials have confirmed Swedish media reports of a mid-July incident in which an American spy plane invaded Sweden’s airspace as it was evading a Russian fighter jet. The maverick plane was spying on Russia when it was intercepted.
The incident, which happened on July 18, went public last Wednesday after a classified document from Sweden’s Defense Ministry was leaked to the press.
The plane, a Boeing RC-135 Rivet Joint, entered Sweden’s airspace after permission to do so was denied by traffic control, Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper said. It passed from the east over the island of Gotland and flew more than 200km over 90 minutes before leaving.
The aerial incursion was caused by a Russian fighter jet, which scrambled from a base in the exclave Kaliningrad Region and approached the American reconnaissance plane.
Neither party involved in the incident confirmed or denied it, but a source in the US military told CNN on weekend that it indeed happen.
The source said the plane was conducting an electronic eavesdropping mission on the Russian military when the latter locked on to the aircraft with a radar station and sent at least one jet to intercept it. The quickest path of escape was through Swedish airspace, which was what the spy plane pilot did despite the Swedes’ objection.

Russia should have had brought it down. US has a habit of spying over other countries.

There is no point escalating, the detection and radar lock itself served the purpose.

Perhaps or perhaps not. US is the one escalating when sending in a spy plane. Russia just intercepted. Though the message would have been conveyed, but considering the fact how stubborn the Yanks really are, a missile up its *** would have sent a rather clear message. Don't mess with the bear"

Ruskies too send their strategic bombers very close to US air space.

Close to an airspace and violate an airspace are two different things. yes Russia does send to show they can reach Us main land, in this case they were already in the Russian skies spying on them. Two different things.

Meh, the US should stop operating under the delusion that the whole world is theirs :P

Not very smart, are you ?

Show US where the RC violated Russian airspace ? Explain to me, who have some experience at SIGINT, on how the US must violate territorial airspace in order to gather EM signals.

Please sir explain to me if it did not violated the russian airspace, why was SU-27 scrambled to intercept when as per you it wasn't in the russian air space and than again the US plane violated Swedish airspace after it was denied permission to escape SU-27.

The US aircraft was in international airspace and many other detailed articles on this incident have cited so. In fact, the US and Russia have a pact where each other's spy planes can fly close to each other's 'countries'- as long as they are in international airspace.

Cut the crap-
I am sure if the RC was in international space it would have stayed there-
Chikening out into swedish airspace illegaly means it was in violation and russia had every right to bring it down if they wanted-

It is not crap, it is being informative and you should try it sometime

On another occasion and on April 12, Russian SU-24 attack jets flew near a Navy vessel, the guided missile destroyer Donald Cook, which was operating in international waters in the Black Sea.

On the other hand you guys have the right to bring our drones down, where we clearly violate at will.

There are many reports stating RC was in international Air space.
But can you explain what the hell it run ??? And run in so much hurry that it had to violate another nation's airspace !!!
Just curious ...

I don't like to chest thump and boast rhetoric but it is you who needs to update yourself on the highlighted part. US does not violate our airspace at will and all drone strikes are with the coordination of Pakistan and to support operation zarba-e-Azb.

Then why did the US plane felt the need to escape the russian fighter and violate another countries airspace (Sweden)?
