The US has, in the past, shown that it is more than willing to start a conflict with Russia, and everytime, it was Russia that back off.

Conflict through proxies like in Vietnam, Korea and Afghanistan yes but not directly. Had this been the case, Cold war would have gone hot and the world over in general. Both countries have nuclear weapons to destroy each other many times over. This refrained cold war from going hot. I am sure sir you have read about the Cuban missile crisis.

Oh, but haven't you heard of when the Soviets threatened to intervene in the Arab-Israeli war, and the US threatened to go to war if the USSR didn't back off?

The USSR tried to call the bluff, but when the US started posturing, the Soviets knew the US was not bluffing.
