Power shortfall surges beyond 6,000 MW

Power crisis in the country has once again intensified as the shortfall surged over 6,000 megawatts on Saturday.

According to the new schedule issued by authorities, urban areas would face eight to ten hours of power cut while 12 to 14 hours of load shedding would be carried out in rural areas- stoking protests in many areas.

The Ministry of Water and Power, however, sticks to its claim of being in complete control of the situation and carrying out six hours load shedding in the cities and eight hours in rural areas, with no unscheduled load shedding in any part of the country.

It concedes merely 3,614MW deficit even during peak hours.

According to its figures, electricity generation in the country currently stands at 15,886megawatts against the demand of 19,500 megawatts. As per its details, the thermal sector generated some 9,900MW, hydle 4,850MW and wind 175MW.

But insiders of the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), an entity that transmits power to cities, admit a deficit close to 6,000MW. According to them, the ministerial claim has three loopholes; exaggerated thermal generation, reduced demand and additional load-shedding in areas of high losses. All three reasons, especially the last one, are open to as much rigging as one wants to. “To begin with, a thermal generation has never gone close to 10,000MW, as claimed by the ministry,” says an official of the company.

“It is not only additional load shedding for high losses areas, but the ministry has also added another dimension – local problems, which are bound to happen at high temperature and could be used as an excuse for any load management,” says an official of Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco).
Sources said that the demand for electricity by Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) alone has doubled.

When will the power stations that are part of CPEC be complete ? When will they start contributing to national grid?

Majority of the projects mentioned were not part of cpec we took loans from adb for them ,they were statrted during Musharaf and PPP tenure Nawaz just has a bad habit of claiming other people work for himself

The energy projects under CPEC as well as others if completed should be able to cover this extra demand and should also give us surplus power.

Where is 6000 MW mention in the Article???
It's 3614 MW

Yes.. There was a protest in Karachi yesterday which also got sour as well sheikhupura where there are regular protests against electric loadshedding and gas load shedding.

They can't extract bills from powerful people and keep crushing the populace with extremely high bills. Its your responsibility to get consumers to pay the bills. Why should the entire city suffer if one factory doesn't pay?

As for electricity well we have PPP to thank for that. Their incompetence left such a mark that made sure we will always be playing catch up. Before the 2013 election I pointed out that these foolish slogans of 6 month electricity shortage ending are lies. This loadshedding problem will not go away anytime soon. Even this 2018 slogan is a lie. Problems are not solved with a blink of an eye.

Even if cpec projects are completed all they can assure is less loadshedding ...

Well let's see. A lot of projects are expected to be completed by 2017.

We have been paying for Neelam Jehlam when I was in School, when are we going to start the production??

.
But let me admit that the condition is still much better than previous years as even now in my part of KPK we by and large have a schedule, which was non existent previously. Light wud come and go on without any routine or indicators and at times loadshedding exceeded 20 hours per day.

buy 12 GE 9HA.02 each gives you 512MW of power at 62% efficency

so 6.14 GW at 62% efficiency= 3.8GW of natural gas power

you are still a few GW short, but you can make that up with renewable energy :agree:
