One thing that I noticed is quite satisfying... the fit and finish has improved... shut-lines are not more crisp and precise... I think there has been some great learning in the engineering and fabrication department.

why is Kalvari... Kalvari Di ?

Kalvari, meaning tiger shark, was the first submarine to be commissioned under the Indian Navy’s submarine arm on December 8, 1967, under the command of Commander K.S. Subramanian. After over three decades of service, the sentinel of the deep was decommissioned on May 31, 1996.

The name Kalvari means Tiger Shark, and in naval tradition, the line of subs will be called the Kalvari-class.

Nearly 1600-tonne subs have a complement of 31 men and can stay out to sea for 50 days. Its two diesel generation sets give it a submerged top speed of 20 knots (37 km/h). Its weapons suite includes Black Shark heavy weight torpedoes that can sink a ship 50 kms away and Exocet anti-ship missile that travels a few feet from the surface of the sea and hits the hull of a target that’s 180 km away. It’s also one of the stealthiest diesel electric submarines in operation with emphasis on reducing hydrodynamic noise, which makes it invisible to enemy sonar. The last two boats of the class will also feature a DRDO designed Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system which will give it longer endurance and make it stealthier because they won’t need to surface for air to charge the batteries.

. .
There already are indications that P75i project will go to a private shipyard and therefore it makes sense to produce more of Kalvari class boats with Indian or imported AIP system. This really is the quickest way to makeup for loss of submarine fleet. As promised from now on one new boat from P75 project will get launched and therefore we can look to add more subs beyond 2018 and given all pre-requisites exist at MDL, there shouldn't be much of problem either.

First Scorpene class submarine set afloat in Mumbai - The Hindu

Kalvari is expected to commission on schedule in Sept 2016
Kalvari, the first ship of Scorpene class submarines being manufactured at Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), was set afloat in the Mumbai naval dockyard on Thursday, setting the stage for its sea trials, and eventual commissioning on schedule in Sept 2016.

The submarine mounted on a pontoon was moved out of submarine yard at the MDL on Tuesday, and it was set afloat in the naval dockyard on Thursday after a ceremony to mark the milestone.

“Unlike in ships where equipment installation takes a long time after launching, submarines are completely fitted out at the time of floating out. The boat is now slated to undergo rigorous harbour trials and tests which would certify each system to its fullest capacity. The trials at sea will start in a few months,” a naval spokesperson said.

Scorpene submarines are 67 meters long, 6.2 meters wide and have 1,550 tonnes displacement. The state-of-art features of the Scorpene include superior stealth and the ability to launch an attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons. The attack can be launched with torpedoes, as well as tube launched anti-ship missiles, underwater or on surface.

Designed to operate in all theatres including the Tropics, the submarines can undertake multifarious missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, operations by special forces and mine laying etc.

The Mazagon Dock is presently constructing six Scorpene class submarines under Project 75 under transfer of technology from DCNS, France. Subsequent boats will be delivered at gaps of nine months from each other. All six are expected to be delivered by 2020.
