What's new

Pakistan will launch a two-seater version of JF-17 - Induction of JF-17B in 2017

LOL. What happened to all those statements PAF doesnt want two seter JF-17 ? This news is equivalent to PAF forced to ate humble pie.
ACM Sohail Aman has been pragmatic. Earlier on in the year ACM Aman mentioned that JF-17B would be used as a LIFT platform in the PAF - i.e. transition rookies for fighter flying. In this sense, the JF-17B serves two valuable roles for the PAF: First, it enables it to prepare pilots for fighter flying along modern lines in an affordable manner, and second, we'd have new pilots ready to join JF-17 squadrons without any lead time.

There is another aspect which the PAF hasn't overtly discussed yet, but that is using the second seat for a WSO who can guide LGBs and laser-guided AGMs in ground-attack missions.

Yes it is obvious B version was badly needed to fuifill all these objectives but the attitude of PAF back in 2011-2014 regarding two seater was pathetic. JF-17 is so easy to fly that whoever will buy it, would not need a two seater and PAF was forced to eat its words.

If this development was done 2 years back, we would have introduced two seater in PAF and would have sold few JF-17 by now because customers are waiting for B version to happen. Time and money lost on strategic thinkers ego's.

Two. seater are planned mainly for customers they would hardly be inducted in PAF. And no year wasted things are going according to plan

It is more of a trainer version for exports
structure will have to be strengthened, body lengthened, range will decrease some what. Will need a stronger engine to have any meaningful role in the air force

ACM Sohail Aman clearly said to AFM in early 2015 that JF-17B will be inducted in PAF to serve as LIFT. They want to get the rookie pilots from K-8 to transition to JF-17 in short-order - with the JF-17B you get a good LIFT platform to impart modern fighter flying (and air warfare) skills, and you have JF-17 pilots ready to join their squadrons.

According to Todays Jang Newspaper Pakistan and China starts Manufacturing JF17-B Duel Seat Fighter Jet.
Air Marshal Muhammad Iqbal is present at the ceremony arranged in Cheng Daun Air Space Corporation

Hi,

The question then needed to be asked is---if the dual seater is to be used for LIFT----then what was the reason it was not designed from Gitgo---as is the normal procedure with most fighter aircraft producers.

Plus---the paf already had single and dual seat version of all the aircraft in their inventory---then why did they not pursue that route from the start.

Why are they going a step back now?

PAF eyes induction of JF-17B fighter jet by April 2017
MATEEN HAIDER — UPDATED LESS THAN A MINUTE AGO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is eyeing formal induction of the newly-launched JF-17B dual seat fighter jet by April 2017, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) announced on Wednesday.

Production of the first JF-17B was initiated by Pakistan and China during a joint ceremony at Chengdu Aerospace Corporation. The jet is set to make its maiden flight by the end of this year, the PAF said.

The dual seat aircraft will enhance training value and operational capability, Air Marshal Muhammad Iqbal said at the ceremony. He also thanked Chinese leadership for their continuous support in the design, development and manufacturing phases of the JF-17 development project.

Chinese leadership paid tribute to PAF authorities for operationalising the aircraft and expressed their resolve to continue support for development work of JF-17 project.

The JF-17 Thunder's operational history
The JF-17 Thunder, a single-engine multi-role fighter jet, and was jointly developed by China and Pakistan. Development on the aircraft started in 1999, and the maiden flight was conducted in 2003.

The initial Block 1 JF-17s were received in 2007, with production of the upgraded Block 2 JF-17s started in 2013. The upgraded models have upgraded avionics, air-to-air refuelling capability, data link, enhanced electronic warfare capability and enhanced load carrying ability.

The JF-17 can be equipped with air-to-air and air-to-ground ordinance. The aircraft mounts both short-range infra-red air to air missiles along with longer ranged radar-guided BVR missiles, an essential capability for a frontline interceptor.

The aircraft can carry 8,000lbs of ordinance on seven external hardpoints, which is an adequate amount of ordinance for any mission profile. The JF-17 enhances the much needed capability of the air force in beyond visual range (BVR) engagements.

The JF-17 is a capable platform, and is on its way to form the backbone of the PAF. It was reported that between 250 and 300 aircraft will be inducted into the air force in order to phase out the ageing fleet of some other aircraft models that are still in operation.

For the Pakistan Air Force, the JF-17 fills the gap that had arisen due to an ageing inventory, which was further impacted by sanctions placed on the country following the nuclear tests in 1998.

Hi,

The funds were withdrawn to procure the single seater and not the dual seater---. They never went for the dual seater from the start----stating that they did not need it---paf pilots were proficient and the aircraft was very easy to fly---there were no transition issues from switching over.

If there are no funds for the program, nothing can be developed. Single or double.
